Timing help
« on: April 21, 2012, 06:05:30 PM »
Can anyone get me a link or tell me how to put my 96 tracker back in time. Its a 16v. I just bought it today for 900. Amazing condition he said it just lost alot of power when trying to pull his ford out. He jerked it so hard that he broke the welded loop on the front of the tracker. He also said the had milage went to crap afterwards. He has the timing belt off to replace can and crank seal. Any how I can't find anything that say exactly how to put it in time.

take a look at the crankshaft pully with the engine running.

Does it wobble?  When the engine is stopped can you wiggle the above-mentioned pulley with your hand?

If it does, the Previous Owner attempted to remove the crankshaft pulley by removing the big bolt in the center of the front of the crankshaft instead of the five smaller bolts that hold the accessory pulley to the crankshaft timing belt pulley.

Removing the big bolt and not properly reseating it can result in damage to the locking keyway which, in turn, throws the timing off enough to cause the engine to run like cr|removethispart|@p.  If the damage is advanced, a new crankshaft and timing pulley is required.

Check that out first and let us know what you have discovered.

I did check the crank pulley. The guy I bought it from already had the pulley and the big bolt off to change the seal. The keyway is in perfect condition. No play or wobble on the crank or pulley . I just want to put it back in time and see how it runs for myself so I can diagnose it correctly.

You may have purchased the 4-door pads instead of the two-door units.

The 4-door calipers are beefier and the rotors are bigger and vented.

Take them back for anexchange
