drum brakes question
« on: June 17, 2012, 07:58:28 PM »
My rear wheel cylinder is leaking again for the third time now.  Last time the rear shoes were shot after not even 1000 miles and the wheel cylinder over extended itself.  Can anyone point me in the right direction before i change the shoes and wheel cylinder again.  I know lots of people do a rear disc conversion but that is not in the budget at this time.  Thanks....

Check the inside dia. of your drum, maybe it's too large and letting the cups pop out of the cylinders, I bent a couple of shoes once putting the brakes on real hard coming down a hill backwards and lost my brakes but I had a 6.4 trans fer case so no big deal but it does get your heart going, if it was mine I would just weld a bead on the bottom of the shoes where they fit into the lower guide and call it good, but that's me!

I agree with this^^^^ but on mine its cuz the shoes are wearing out quickly.  Any ideas why?

it could be your free play adjustment on your master cylinder or your parking brake cables, I would drive it down the road a ways and pull over and see if your drums are getting hot if you can not find them rubbing while on jack stands, are you going through sand allot ? any mud in there? also when brake lines(rubber ones) go bad they some times swell up on the inside and will do this. mostly from contamination from a cleaning solvent.

Use semi-metallic shoes of course.

Don't buy rebuilt wheel cylinders either, imo.
