4-door 14gal fuel tank on 2-door?
« on: April 10, 2004, 06:18:46 PM »
man, i'm on a roll with questions tonight
LOL
but i heard a while back the suggestion of putting the "slightly" larger 14 gallon 4-door track/kick fuel tank on a 2 door.

is this really possible?  and how much better would fuel economy be this way.  Like that matters in these fuel hungry little guys.  but if it will better my consumtion i'd consider it a worthy mod.

Unless I'm missing something, this mod won't change the fuel economy at all. It will just allow you to go longer between fillups because there's an extra 3 gallons or so...

I think Dave Jones, in the UK, tried to do the conversion.

He said it wouldnt work because the frame on the 2-door is too narrow to fit the 4-door fuel tank between.

yeah, that's exactly why i was asking....longer runs between fill ups.  I use my track/kick for ALOT of traveling, and would love to have better distance from a tank of fuel.

Now wait a minute.  How could the spacing between the frame rails be different?  That just doesn't seem right to me.  There might be a difference in the cross members (I'm sure there is), but I just can't imagine that the distance between the frame rails is any different.  But this is just speculation.  Maybe I'll take a tape measure to my 2-door and my 4-door.

Maybe he did mention the cross members and not the frame.  It was a while ago that I read the write up.  I just recall him saying that it wouldnt fit.

Here's the write up.  Half way down it shows the size differance between the two tanks and why the big one wouldnt fit.

I will have to take a few measurements next time I am out with the club. Maybe the tank Dave Jones had came from a V6 lwb, which I think maybe the UK version of the Sidekick Sport. That I believe does have wider frame rails

The article says framerails were too narrow on the 2door...  :-/

Does that go for the 99+ too?
Mine says sport on the front fender of my 99.
And when we had an 00 too, my 99 seemed bigger for some reason.
Did the 99+ have a sport model? I didn't think so but I've seen some with the same decal in the same place, even on a 4 door too?
