Engine Rebuild Question
« on: August 21, 2012, 10:18:43 AM »
I have an 88 samurai i picked up for $1500 bucks, its my second samurai and hopefully i wont have to sell this one. the body is in excellent shape it already has a 6.5:1 crawler, lock rite locker in the front, spool in the back, calimini lift kit and all four 32-11.50 maxxis bighorns are about 90%, the only hang up was that the engine was laying on a pallet in front of it with a hole in the block and shredded timing belt. i picked up another short block, had it bored and honed, new pistons, rings and bearing kit, picked up a head and cam off a buddy of mine for 20 bucks (he did a motor swap and parted out the old one).

Anyway i was installing the head gasket and noticed on the gasket i have the front oil drain hole is considerably smaller on the gasket than on the block, i did a small amount of research and put some thought into it and decided to install it anyway (good or bad idea???).

Also i installed the inside timing cover that goes behind the cam timing sprocket and found out a lil while later that i needed a gasket for it (didnt have one in my gasket set), should i go back and do that, or is it really a do or die situation?

And finally i was looking at a parts catalog and saw that the timing belt tensioner had a washer in the parts set, im assuming that it goes in behind the adjusting nut and not the pulley but i didnt want to run into any belt alignment issues down the road.. im having trouble finding all the parts this guy had with the motor between the five gallon bucket and 4 cardboard boxes, so any input is GREATLY appreciated, i really wanna build it right because i i dont have a lot of money to sink into it if the motor gives again..

Are you sure you didn't install the head gasket on backwards?  If you did then you cover up one of the oil drain holes and you will destroy the head.

No im positive its on correctly, its the front oil drain hole, the rear is the right size and every other hole aligns correctly, i compared it to the old gasket and it was the same way,  i did a decent amount of research and found 1 other person with the same issue, i assumed that it might have been a superceded head gasket and that maybe they had issues with the oil draining too quickly out of the head

I have only seen this on some aftermarket gaskets. All originals have the correct size hole. I have read on here and other sites that the aftermarket gaskets do not last very long. I use OEM so I cannot say how short their life span is, but for a few dollars more I'll use the Suzuki gaskets.
