Samurai seats, replace or repair?
« on: September 04, 2012, 12:05:50 PM »
Hi all,

The seats in my Sami are horrible.  They are falling apart after 20 years of neglect.  Does anyone know if it would be cheaper to replace the front seats or try to rebuild them?  They will need new covers and the padding is shot.

Any suggestion or recomendations?  Maybe someone has found a cheap replacement.  The back seat is horrible too and needs attention also.

Thanks,

Rob

Dodge/Plymouth Neon seats are a nice replacement.  The later ones (99ish and newer) have a lot more padding than the older Neon seats and tons more padding than samurai seats.  I have the newer Neon seats in a couple of my samurais.  If you remove the Neon seat rails from the seats (have to grind/drill out some rivets and cut a bracket), the front holes are spaced perfectly for the samurai seat rails to fit.  You have to make your own holes (I used self tapping bolts), to mount the rails on the rear part of the seat.
I personally wouldn't spend a dime on redoing samurai seats.  You can usually get the Neon seats from a junkyard for $20-$30 each.

For the rear seat, you are kinda limited.  The samurai seat is so narrow, that very few other vehicles will have seats that will fit (even trackick rear seats are too wide to fit between the samurai fenderwells).  I think a jeep yj/cj seat will fit.  Or you could have the samurai seat redone....it might cost more than it's worth, but it might be your best option, if you can't find a good replacement samurai seat.

Thanks for the reply.  I figured that the stock seats were not worth wasting time and effort on.

Has anyone got experience with Corbeau Moab seats?  I kind of landed on those as a new alternative to fix my issue.

One issue with aftermarket seats is the width.  There isn't a lot of room in the SJ's.

I have seen 1 sami with them and they looked awesome.  I will make sure they fit.

Thanks for you input.

The Neon seats are a major improvement over the stock seats. I recently did this to mine and was amazed at how easy (after you take off the Neon floor brackets)of a mod it was.

Sorry no real far away shots (I can get some if you want them). As far as the backseat goes, I was able to score a really ratty one at my local JY for 25.00 and had it recovered for 125.00. Might have been a little pricey, but the guy did a great job on it with marine grade material.

I have Corvette Stingray seats in mine and I know that really isn't practical but I already had them. My point in telling you this is as Drone mentioned about the width. The Stingray seat is 19" wide. With some minor fabrication I installed the Sammi seat tracks under them so they would be a bolt up item.

Mine is a JX but I needed to keep the seats narrow because I installed a Tuffy locking console too. Without the console you could crowd to the center some to allow a bit larger seat.

If you find another seat that you like in the 19-21" range I think they should go in fairly easily with minimal modifications.

Another thing to consider might be durablity. I like leather / vinyl for looks and cleaning ease. I run mine without the top alot so the interior is exposed to the sun and dust. Not to mention what happens when we go play off the road. Cloth seats soil to quickly / to badly for my hard earned $$$.

It takes a little time (45 mins per seat) but i have 2004 mitsubishi lancer seats in mine. They have way way more padding. And are much wider which is nice for us bigger guys. You will have to take the driver side seat mounts all off of the floor pan and use some 1/4 plate as your new mounts. Seats go so far back a giant could drive my sami.not to mention the lumbar controll and it has a knob to move bottom of seat (part you sit on ) up and do Down. Pics if u want em. :)

Thanks guys.  I would never turn down pictures if you have them.  I'm sure others would like to see what others have done too.

Still looking for the right seats.  The Stingray seats look very nice in the Samurai.
