Hole iin the Bell Housing??
« on: September 05, 2012, 04:54:58 AM »
Please dont shoot me or laugh me out of here.  I rarely post but do read.  I have a 94 Samuarai that i recently had the motor rebuilt.  I noticed a hole (machine made) in the bell housing that  exposes the fly wheel. Hate to be stupid, but i dont see how to plug this or attach a cover.  Surely its not intended to stay open and allow debris to get inside....help anyone.

It is a timing mark inspection hole that is usually covered by a rubber plug.

Rotate the crank to TDC and you will see the timing marks on the flywheel if it is still stock. When I bought a replacement flywheel that didn't have them, I used a dremel tool to put the marks back on the new flywheel.

Leaving it open will not hurt anything.
35 years of Samurai ownership, and I still have my very first one. :)

Thanks guys, Im not a mechanic or grease monkey but I do have a pretty nice little 94 Sami that Im very proud of. l mostly stock with a lift kit and 30" tires.  I was concerened that mud and crap could mess up the flywheel and workings inside.  I'll feel better by puchasing a plug.

Really, put the plug in it.  If the factory put it there it was for a reason. Jonny Rash may be right, you could probably go thousands of miles without any problems, but one rock or bath in deep muddy water may also put you on the side of the road.
