Klune Drive v. 2nd Transfer Case
« on: March 31, 2004, 06:25:15 AM »
I am considering installing a second transfer case or a Klune drive to lower the crawl speed of my Sami. The Klune drive appears to be the clean and easy way to do it, but the Samurai kit offered by most of the Zuk vendors is about $2,500 with shipping. :P Has anyone out there somehow installed a second Samurai t-case (or other configuration) as a low cost alternative? I have checked some of the do-it-yourself articles on the web, but can't find any reference to the install of a Klune drive or a second t-case.

I'm not sure the Klune setup is still available for the Suzuki. Have you gotten a recent price/availability quote? As far as finding a article on the web, I don't think there has been a completed published document on a dual case set up. There have been a few blurbs and pics on some forums but nothing archive and really accessible. Like Stu said, maybe a search on OTT will yield some positive results for you.

Good Luck, -Eric

I looked at the OTT site but their applications all involve the Sidekick/Tracker 1600 mounted to the same trans and t-case ultimately to the Sami t-case. I know I should consider the swap, but my Sami is not my daily driver and I don't really expect to go fast in it (no drag races with wild's turbo kick). ;)
RRO has the Klune drive listed with the Sami kit at $2,500+
http://www.rocky-road.com/klune.html

Klune has info on the Sami kit on it's web site and directs to distributors including Petroworks.

How about this possibility. :-/  Can I keep the stock Sami motor for now and run the kick trans and t-case from OTT?

what about a kicker 3?
The kicker 3â„¢ will allow the Suzuki Samurai owner to mate his Samurai transfercase directly to sidekick low-range gearbox

you could install a 1.6 and Kicker3 cheaper then buying a Klune (if you can find one).
You can use SOS's Lucky 13 to mate you 1.3 to a Tracker transmission and Kicker3

16V 1.6L, kick T-case, and a Heather
T-case knockoff from OTT, that would
do the trick  ;)

Right from the OTT site.  They rework a Trackick t-case that will bolt to your Sami trans, and then bolt your Sami t-case to the Trackick t-case.

From OTT:

The kicker 3â„¢ will allow the Suzuki Samurai owner to mate his Samurai transfercase directly to sidekick lowrange gearbox.

This adapter aligns and supports the Samurai transfer case under the truck.

Now the Samurai owner can pack a lot of drivetrain under a short wheelbase truck.

Adapter manufacturer to leave transfer case in stock location. ideal for the short wheelbase truck.

Due to the 3rd generation's electronic speedometer, it would be difficult to use anything other than the stock t-case. I've just purchased a Toyota case real cheap. I'd like to place this between the auto tranny (4-sp) of the X and the stock t-case to get my low gearing down.

I've got more research to do, but if the X's speedo is programmable, I should be able to 'correct' it for which size tires I'm running.
