Lockers
« on: October 23, 2012, 01:45:42 PM »
I need some help.  I need Lockers for my sammi, but I don't know which ones to buy.  I do drive it on the road some.  Not really worried about a rough ride though.  I don't drive far.  Would I be able to drive on the road with Detriot locker in the rear and spool in the front?  How do the different options work?  Advatages and disavatages?  Should i just buy the ARB.  using hoses and air, seem that would be just be more parts to wear out or break?  Also which Lockers are the most dependable?  My rig is a complete yota conversion also, axles and diffys.

If you take it easy on highway lockers will be ok.  Don't know where you are at but watch out if you have ice/snowy roads.  Can get pretty squirrely.  I have ran Detriots in my 92 Samurai, both front and rear.  I don't have power steering but wish I would have gotten it, on dry ground it can be tuff trying to turn around.  Arb's come with a big price tag but would be really nice to have a selectable locker in the front.  I got my Detriots at Rocky Road Outfitters.
The Price is Right!

I have "lunchbox lockers" (EZ, Lock Rite, Spartan etc) front and rear in a couple of Samurais.  Both of these Samurais are setup for primarily offroad, and not daily drivers.  On the road, the rear locker can be quirky, but still streetable.  Some of the negative characteristics: the Samurai will pull to one side or the other when accelerating, there is a lot of driveline windup which can be a major pain in stop and go traffic, clicks and bangs on sharp turns into park lots etc.  Again, they are pretty liveable on dry pavement.

I drive other Samurais/Kicks when it snows/ices so I cannot coment there.  I imagine it would be quite scary.

If your Samurai is primarily offroad driven, I would go ahead an install some lunchbox lockers in your Toy axles.  I wouldn't put a spool in the front though-you do want to be able to turn.

35 years of Samurai ownership, and I still have my very first one. :)

I'm running Detroit easy lock in my front and a spool in the rear I drive it on the road all the time it barks a little in the rear when you turn sharp but thats it. Love the spool in the rear dif. very inexpensive for the spool and the easiest install you could ask for.
