Early vs. Late Kick PS  ???
« on: March 24, 2004, 01:13:30 PM »
Does anyone know exactly what are the differences between the early and late model Kick PS setups are?
I know they changed somewhere in the mid 90's. Early had a steel PS pump and late had an aluminum pump (both made by KYB). The later have a pressed on pulley (I'm told they are not replaceable, unlike the early models). Are the steering boxes the same? I'm running a 91 setup and just picked up a 96 box for a spare...
Is one stronger or better than the other?

My 91 Sidekick doesn't even have power steering.

Sorry I can't be of help.

The p/s that I've been using in my sammies for the last few years was out of a 96, looks the same as any kick p/s that I've seen to date.

The mounting brackets for a 16V and 8V Pump are different, and the brackets for AC/non AC rigs are different. I had to buy new PS Pump and compressor brackets to go on my 8V motor when installing power steering form a 16V Tracker. The Box bolted right up to the frame with no modifications. There are a few different pumps (3 I think) that have been used over the years made by two different companies but they will interchange and mount to the brackets with just minor drilling. There is a slight difference in the spacing of the boltholes on the pumps.

Cool, I had no idea of what I was getting into and thought the worse whrn the brackets would not fit on my 8v. I called Hawk and spoke to William(I think) and he was Very knowledgable on the subject. If you hsve sny questions or need parts, give him a call. I just told him what I was doing, he knew exactly what I needed to accomplish it. I just told him to send me whatever I needed, and he did ;D
