Came is fired
« on: May 04, 2016, 04:59:25 PM »
So, motor back from the machine shop.  Mechanic installed it.  five minutes later, the top end was fired.  Not sure yet what caused it, but the came is fired, the pulley is fried.  Front bearing for sure, probably the rest of the bearings.  Not sure about the valves yet.  So, gonna need a new cam and pulley for sure.  is there an aftermarket cam out there that will give the 16 valve motor a bit more pop?  In any case, any idea where I can get parts?

Can I assume you mean "fried"?
Can I assume the motor was at the machine shop for a rebuild?

If so, hand it back to them - there is a 99% probabilitythey installed the head gasket incorrectly - when that happens the gasket blocks the oil way to the head - and if that is, what in fact, happened, you'll also need a new head.

Yes.  Fired.  Yes machine shop rebuild.  Thanks for the information.  Is that a common error?  Are the parts still available?

I won't say that it is a common error, but it certainly is not uncommon - an experienced technician, paying attention to what he's doing, shouldn't make it, an inexperienced owner, doing a DIY rebuild might - some head gaskets are marked "TOP", some aren't - but, an experienced assembler should know that he/she has to check to make sure that the various holes and passages all line up correctly.

Part availability - in my neck of the woods, I probably could get parts, but I suspect it would be less expensive to buy a complete used engine - if you're in the US, Suzuki's departure from the automotive market has made it difficult to find parts, but, there are a number of off road specialty shops who disassemble and should have parts.

Low Range Off Road are showing remanufactured heads on their webpage - give them a call.

Thanks Fordem.  The machine shop says they are going to take care of it.  So, we'll see.

Fordem, you hit the nail on the head.  Head gasket installed backwards blocking the oil passages.  The machine shop replaced the head and cam, as well as the belt N/C.  No issues, very apologetic.
