89 tracker fuel injection problem

my gf owns a 1989 tracker, tin top, 2 door... we seem to be getting horrible gas milage out of it, like 16 MPG area... we figured out that the injector makes a pop pop pop noise when u have the head lights on or ne thing that draws power... also when u first start it up the idol goes way up to around 2500 3000... for about 5 minutes and then goes up and down for the next 5 minutes... we fiddled around and decided to unplug the acclerator pump.. seems to solve the head light problem but not the gas milage... ne info on this would be greatly appreciated. thanxs

i have a 91 track 8v with bad milage and it is atributed to the bad 02 sensor :'( so u might want to check that out

i havent changed mine because i am affraid to brake it  :o

you've probably got a bad O2 sensor. Common for fuel consumption to increase as they fail.As for the idle, be sure TPS is adjusted properly, if it is, do a search for loping idle here or on the ORC BBS, I can't remember where I saw it last. Good luck. Oh, what did you mean by "acceleretor pump"? That function has been taken ovewr by the ECM. Idle kicker vacuum hose, maybe? That will cause a high idle with it off.

it idols high with it on or off... im prety sure the TPS needs to be re adjusted though, just a matter of how to do it properly

does the idle ever smooth out? let it warm up to operating temp, loosen two screws holding TPS adjustment, rotate TPS either way until idle jumps up, then rotate back to when idle comes down. Get the adjustment as close to the "breakover" point as possible without increasing the idle. Thats all you need to do.

well that seems prety easy, and yes the idol goes normal when its warm.. well ill do that tomorrow and let you know how it goes

I have an 89', The IASC valve is water temp activated,
that is, water flows through it.
It could be sticking, and the pop pop pop is normal,
I think it's the high idle opening and closing.
O2 sensor needs to be checked with a low voltage meter,
it produces 0 to .5 V depending on the O2 present in the exhaust,
looking OK and pretty new are not checks for O2 health, LOL

Even new sensors can fail, even Bosch sensors fail in months,
I had one do just that, the stock O2 was still good, I replaced it
because it was old and I had 230,000 miles on the clock, so it
must need a new one, right ........

thanxs alot for the info !! gona check the voltage like you said, and try swapping in a working one and we'l see how it goes
