Hard to get 87 sj413 into 1st and 3rd gear
« on: July 30, 2016, 10:42:41 PM »
Thanks for the add,I recently got my first zuki.let me know if I'm posting in the right section,I'm a forum newb.I drove it home and it's hard to get into first gear and third.also when I'm crusing along and let off the gas it sounds like the throw out bearing makes alot of noise.if I give it gas it goes away.the guy I bought it from said it needed to adjust clutch, but I'm not sure if that's it or not.any insight would be greatly appreciated.

That is probably not the throw out bearing - the throw out bearing SHOULD only be rotating when the clutch is depressed - if the clutch is incorrectly adjusted, it is possible for it to be constantly rotating, which will cause rapid wear, however, it won't make a difference if you're on or off the gas.

That is either a transmission, transfer case or axle related issue - try to pinpoint the approximate location of the noise - front, mid or rear of the vehicle, and which gears it makes noise in - if it's all the gears, it's likely to be the rear axle, if it's all the gears except fourth, it'll be the transmission.

Is there harm in simply adjusting the cable? I had this problem, tightened up my cable, and now it drives and shifts nicely.

Oh yeah, my transfer case shifter makes a lot of noise (and movement) when the transmission is in 1st or 3rd.

For clutch adjustment, I...

1) Use a stick between the pedal and seat to keep the pedal pressed.

2) Put a block of wood between the arm and any solid part.

3) Remove the stick.

This releases the tension on the cable, allowing you to adjust it by hand.

4) Make a *small* tightening adjustment.

5) Use the stick on the pedal again.

6) Remove the block.

7) Test. Repeat as necessary until the clutch doesn't bind up and shifts into 1st/3rd without difficulty.

Of course, if you have an assistant, you can simply have them press the pedal while you adjust, but I'm always on my own.

Remember -- SMALL adjustments. Like one turn at a time.

Ok I'll have to try that.thanks.so I've been going threw my zuki for 15 hours straight,I'm super pumped to finally have one.the previous owner put in danas in front and back.the back driveline has a weird angle even with shims.do they have to be perfectly straight? Also it's fuel injected but it seems to struggle at idle until fully warmed up,is that normal? It has a slight knock if it idles but goes away after even the slightest amount of throttle.I'm sorry for all the questions in this thread, let me know if I should make new thread for different probs.

There's a right way & a wrong way to adjust the clutch - you'll find the right way in the service manual, and you'll find the service manual at Ack's FAQ.

Just type clutch into the search box.

Is my cable adjustment the wrong way? It's always worked for me and I've never had to replace a clutch.

I really didn't think I would have to spell things out that minutely.

1 - Go to www.acksfaq.com
2 - Click the search button at www.acksfaq.com
3 - Type clutch into the search box at www.acksfaq.com
4 - Click the submit button

Is that clear enough?
