Sidekick Wont Start!!  HELP!!
« on: March 17, 2004, 12:57:08 PM »
Hello everyone,  I have a 91' 8V kick, 1.6 5 Speed.

I was driving home from work tonight and my truck just died and wouldn't start again.  Upon checking things out, I have realized it has good spark, timing belt is fine. good fuel pressure at the TBI,  BUT there is no fuel spray at the injector. If I pour gas straight into the TBI it will start and run for a bit before dying off again. So whatever causes the injector to function is obviously not working.  I have checked resistance on the injector, and the TPS and both are within range.  I am stumped.  Can someone help me out?  this is my only vehicle and I need it for work.

thanks in advance for ANY help!

Sounds like the EFI computer has gone bad.
From what I hear, there were some less than
good quality Capacitors in the ECU that leak,
(A Capacitor is like a battery, has acid in it)
so if you get the ECU out open it up and look
for the corroded circuit traces, replace the caps
and make the connections with wires were the
traces are corroded away.

Or contact Kerry, he should have some
replacements if you want to go that way,
Kerry has the post that is unbreakable

I had a similar experience with my '92.  Only once you got it going it would stay running.  The relays under the dash would also click when it wouldn't start.  Turned out to be the ECM.  I tried replacing the obviously leaking capacitators but that didn't work.  Perhaps because too much damage was already done.

Well, I pulled the computer and had a good look at it and as far as I can see everything looks to be in perfect condition.  It looks as if it is brand new and there are no funny smells or anything coming from it.  So I am not sure where else to look.

Any other suggestions?

See if you can find a cheap computer
and try it out, or the Injector has a
burned out coil, but you said that tested
OK, the pintle in the injector could be sticking
or the filter screen is plugged with gunk.

Pop the injector out and check the screen, also
check your main fuel filter to see if it's plugged.

Burned out fuel pump ?? Fuses OK for the Pump
also the relay working

Just random thoughts

Good luck,

Did you open the case and look at the board ???
Just curious, and the thought crossed my mind

hi,

I've got over 30 psi at the TBI for fuel pressure upon doing a test with a gauge.

and yes, I looked at the board inside the computer and looks brand new inside...

not sure what else to do  ???

Have you tried a injecter pulse light?  It's a little light that pluges into the injector plug.  So if you have a injecter pulse the light will flash.

Or if there's an Auto Zone type place near you, tow it there and have them use a scanner to check on the computer.

Well, you have done the work, it's either
the injector is plugged, or a bad connection
to the injector, fuel PSI should be 36 so over
30 is enough to run at idle at least, check the
screen and make sure you don't have a broken
wire feeding the injector.

BTW, What is the Ohm reading of the injector coil ???
Over 10 Ohms you can hit the injector with straight 12V
from the battery as a test of the injectors integrity, if
that works, find the bad wire or another ECU

P.S.  even a low Ohm injector can take a 1 Second hit of 12V
just don't do it too much, coil will get hot and burn out.

Good Luck,
Wild
