Vitara lift question
« on: March 14, 2004, 06:46:46 AM »
I have a specific Vitara question I hope you Guys can help me with. What do you think of  2inch longer BDS coils with Old Man Emu struts leaving everthing else stock. Would this be to much for my half shaft? One last question is the passenger side half shaft supposed to slide? Mine does and it looks like there is a little leakeage from where it enters the diff.  This is for my 03

Thanks

Clay

For the leak, clean it first and make sure it's a leak of the diff oil and not of an engine oil change.

You lift should be fine. It's not that much of a difference from stock.

My planned lift for the 02 X. I'm looking at a 1" body lift (pics in the webshots show the long body mount studs) by using Trail Tough's Sami 1" body lift, spacers for the coils (yours and 1.5" Jeep poly spacers), longer shocks for the rear (after measuring), use of Trackick upper mount for the struts (keeping my stock struts for now).

Then to come the axle swaps with r&p gears and lockers, t-case gears, front/rear bumpers, rock skids for belly and kick panels, maybe even dual t-cases.

Cool, I decided that I want 235/75 tires so I can go more agressive and wanted the extra hight (every bit helps) that the coils will give.  What are you going to have to do to make the body lift work? You are thinking on the same line as I am. I was looking at the 2inch body lift but would like a 1inch. The other idea I had was to put RRO coil spacers on with the new coils. After reading there web site they seem to give like 1inch of  lift.

Thanks

Trail Tough's body lift for a Sami comes with lift spacer and a threaded tube nut. Currently, the X's body stud extends past the nut some 1" and actually hangs below the frame bracket. I've bent 2 so far. The upper rubber mount is secured into a cavity of the frame mount. This provides structure support to the body panels. To keep that support, it would be best to have a spacer to fit the frame mount, but be overall taller. By using a small spacer I'm hoping to keep the structuralibility and I lift the body stud into the lower rubber bushing. The threaded tube nut then acts as a sleeve on the stud. With a small body lift, I don't think there will be ill-effects for the steering. The length could be adjusted by the adjusting sleeve and the angle change will be absorbed in the u-joints. We'll see. It's still a little 'planned' out and not much reality.
I'm still waiting on response from Overland Components in UK.

Try this for measuring. Measure the static length of the coil from top mount down to arm. Then lift the frame till the measurement is 3/4" difference. This will give you an idea of the lift of the 3/4" spacer. This is also good for measuring the travel of the strut. You may have to take the coil in and out a few times to get good measurements for the strut.

Oops, Trail Tough, as far as I know, doesn't have a body lift kit for the Sami.

Sky Mfg. is the manu.
