Very informative, thanks AO.

I usually just buy the lowest rating anyways. I'm not rich enough to afford the 92 octane  :P

I think I can count on one hand how many times I've bought 92 octane in the 11 years I've had my Sidekick, and one of the times was by accident. 87 all the way.

OK Guys here is the question then. Why do I have to put 92 in my kick? Everything else makes it spark knock like a beeotch! Checked the timing and it is dead on.

carbon build up.  Try running a fule cleaner.  The stuff you add to the gas tank. Might help and shouldn't hurt

Spark Plugs too hot ??? Check the #s
and replace with colder heat range if
the ones you have are right.

I know, I read what you said and then searched google to find more info. Then I posted a link, so you see it was your info that got me looking for more. I always thought the higher octane fuel was the better gas. I learned something new thanks to you.

Thanks

Ã‚  Think of octane rating as resistance to spark.  The higher the rating, the higher the resistance.  If you're car is knocking, its trying to spark too soon, too easily.  Running higher octane = higher resistance, preventing it from sparking (knocking) too easily.

Well that's a sort of correct thought, Octane is
resistance to detonation under heat and pressure,
not to spark, we want the mixture to burn, not
detonate like an explosion, much too
violent on the engine, and with extended high
power use while pinging can result in holes in
the pistons, and somtimes if the pistons survive
the rods can be bent from the extreemly high
pressures from fuel pre-detonation, ping is bad,
I'm fighting it now that I'm running 9 PSI
boost, even on 91RON which is the best I can get
from the pump.
