Seal Replacement
« on: March 10, 2004, 07:26:58 PM »
Not the one from the game :P

>:(OK. I'm sitting at work 3:00 am been here for 2 hrs, cant sleep and I'm pissed off.  >:(

I found out last night that my front crank and cam seals are leaking like crazy >:(. I thought that it was an oil pan leak, but it was the oil leaking out of the bottom of the timing belt cover and running down on the pan. There also appears to be a crack at the bottom edge of the crank seal :-/

What am I looking at here? Are the seals a pain to replace or are they fairly easy? ???

Also, if there is a crack in the block just below the crank is there a way for it to be fixed, or am I looking at getting a new block?

I'm suppose to be leaving for Moab in 19 days and must get this fixed before I drive out. Please respond ASAP. Damn I hope this does not cost to much to fix, the Moab budget is already tight as is >:(

Thanks,
Zig

OH Yea, my timing belt cover had a hole worn in it from belt rubbage when a alt. bracket broke. Can I just leave the cover off? I was thinking it was just a dust cover.

Well all 3 Suzukis that I've have have a hole worn in the timing belt cover from the crank pulley. You don't need it on there but it would be wise to replace it. Hawk sells brand new ones for $20 or $30. I could be wrong but it sounds like the crack might be in the oil pump housing and not in the actual block. I could send one to you that should be in good working order off an '89 Kick. I was going to rebuild the 1.6 for my Sammy but the block was cracked between the 3 and 4 cylinders so the oil pump isn't going to do me any good. If this will help you on your quest to Moab post or IM me.

The seals are easy to fix, I had a leaking
Cam seal from day 1, the sealing surface
on the cam had a scratch across it, which
ate the seal and caused the leak, so I
sanded it smooth and replaced the seal,
all good now, as far as the crank seal, just
pull the front cover off, pullies, timing belt
and pull the old one out, push the new one in
took me an hour last time I did it with the
engine in the trucklet.

not a big deal, don't worry.

The biggest pain in the butt about doing a rear main seal, is taking the transmission out of the way. The rear main is in a small housing that can be removed. It makes it very easy to change. No it's not a pain. Neither are the cam and crank seals. The biggest pain with either one of those, is the crank seal. Namely getting the crank gear off. That's a pain!

Thanks for the replys. I have not been able to sleep all week ,1.5hr Monday, 2.0 hr Tues, NONE Wed, that is why I was at work. I'd rather be making $'s than sitting on the couch not being able to sleep. I have way to much shit going on right now. I guess the stress got to me. Finally slept last night after LOTS to drink during dinner.

I'm glad to hear that it is not a big deal. I did not find the problem and I still have not been able to look at it. I wont have time to work on it, so I will get it down to a local shop to be replaced when the widening and power steering is done.

Thanks again,
Zig
