Manual to Auto swap?

It's hard to find an XL-7 with a 5spd so..
I was wondering if I found one with an Auto how hard would it be to fit it into my 99 5spd?
Then...
If I find a 5spd and 5spd ecm/ecu later could I just swap them back in? :-/ Is it that easy or am I dreaming?

I really want to get started on my 99 XL-7 Conv 8) but don't want to have to spend alot of $$ and time swaping parts back and forth for months at a time.

THere's a dude here that did just what you wanted to do.........gosh I totally forgot his handle too.  But he is here and he'd be the best source on this.

He put the 2.7 into his 95

Hey 95XL7 did you have a manual to start with?
I know you put an auto in it.

Yes, i had stick originally. If you get a complete donor vehicle everything will work out except the rear driveshaft? Of course it will be alot more work. If you don't get a complete vehicle i wouldn't do it. I doubt you will want to go back to stick once you drive it with a auto. If the 99 and up are the same as mine, the pedal brackets are the same from auto to stick,i just removed the clutch pedal and replaced the brake pedal with a auto pedal(wider).
If your looking for a quick swap i would stick with the manual trans.                               Stu.

I had a 00 2dr with an auto. I liked it too, but I want the swap to go easy and also would like to stay with the manual (less likely the wife will drive it then) ;D

Honestly i can't say? The problem i'm thinking about would be the dash harness,which is different from auto to stick. But maybe the extra connectors could just be left open? Plus the engine harness connects to the trans harness near the bell housing.I would hold out for a manual car or get a 200.00 beater to drive while your doing the swap.

When i did mine i was unemployed and had all the time in the world to do it,also the Trac isn't my primary driver,just my toy.                             Stu.

Another thing to think about is if you're going to run crawler gears in the t-case. If so, the XL.7 auto or manual will NOT work. The GV 2.5 liter automatic is your only solution to connect with a sidekick t-case fitted with your favorite crawler gears. FWIW The GV auto will bolt to the XL.7 engine....

No crawler gears. It's my daily driver and I'm not going anywhere where I would need lower gears than I already have. Unless it makes it faster

I do have a question though...
What size diff gears are in the XL7 and would it be better to stay with the 2.0 gears(what size are they?).

I guess what i'm asking is.. is it the bigger the number the slower the wheels turn or is it the lower the number the faster they turn?

I'd like to be able to takeoff from a light fast but don't want to give up my top end speed either cause I drive on the highway(70mph) and don't want it to sound like its gonna blow up.

I know auto XL7's have 513 gears and so did my 95 with the manual so my tracker pretty much runs just like the XL7 would except for the fact i have 31" tires. The higher the number gear ratio is lower and makes take off quicker but limits top end if your transmission is also geared low.

Look in the tech specs on the front page for your gear ratio says 4.875. XL7 manual 4.30 ,auto's 5.12, so if you installed a XL7 stick in your rig, you would benefit by having a slightly lower ratio 4.875 VS 4.30.
