« on: March 05, 2004, 04:56:48 PM »
my battery in my 91 has taken a crap..i had to drive home on the alt lol sigh ::)

so what are the recomendations on batterys that will fit in the stock location? i can modify to make fit if neccisary

i have a large stereo so id like to upgrade the battery to a better one since i acctually have to pay for this battery(dads a manager of a pick'n'pull)

Optima Yellow top Battery.  It's the same size as your stock and it's sopost to be the best.

Or if you wan't cheap.  If you know anyone that belongs to a Sam's club, they have one for a $100.

I have one in my Chev truck and have been happy with it.

optima red tops can usually be had for a fair amount less than yellow and from what i have been told are a better battery for the day to day running of a vechile vs. the yellow which is better suited to car audio and high power applications

this poor wet cell just was feed up with being discharged lol

thanks for the help guys =) i am gunna go on tuesday so i have a little more time to find the right one

hey guys i am kind of confused about this battery thing

..the batt randomly dies..over bumps no bumps..stereo no stereo cold hot doesnt matter it will just spontainously die it has done it 4 times now

also when i switch the car on to the aux..it runs everything lights up and such but if i turn on the vents it takes 20 secconds or so...to kind of ramp up the power and then it starts to blow

same thing with the lights they take a bit to light up but when they lightup they are dim

i took off the cables and checked for corsion on the ends then put them back on..after that the starter will click once whereas before it wouldnt click at all

im very very confused...

does the temp ggauge go up at all and do your lights dim when you touch your brakes ? i would check yor chassis and other grounds {replace the ground strap from the distr to the fire wall whith a braided strap} as far as the battery dyin thats your alternator!

It sounds like your battery is just not any good any more.

The best way to know is with a volt meter.  You can find them cheep.

Put it on the battery and check the voltage.  Should be around 12 - 14 volts with nothing on.

Have someone try to start the truck.  The voltage should not drop below 9 volts.  If it does the batt is no good.

Next, get the truck started.  Jump it if you have to.  Now check the voltage.  Is it between 12 - 14 so volts?  If it is your altenator is fine.  If the voltage is the same or below the voltage when you started then your alt. is bad.

If you get a voltage of 15 plus when the truck is started then your alt. is putting out too much voltage and probely made your batt to go bad.  You will then have to replace the alt.

Hopes this helps.

Sorry, but I didn't make my self clear.  Sam's has a dry cell battery of the company they sell.  It's like a Champeion or something.

My thought was, their aren't that many places that make a dry cell and it looks just like a Optima, except it's black, so I thought I'd give it a try.  Like I've said it's worked great for me so far.

Sam's = $100
Optima = $200 +?

Also, if you have a Autozone my you I think they might sell Optimas now.  But I know they will check out your batt and alt. system and let you know how it's going.

Be careful and bring extra tools.  I did the above mentioned when I got that dry cell from Sam's.  I took my battery wrench and a 13mm so that I could remove the battery, exchange it, and put the new one in.

I got the batter first (sam's don't have a core charge on batts).  Then I poped the hood and proceaded to remove the battery.

The complete terminal came out of the battery.  So now I'm stuck, how do I get the bolt out of the cable??  No problem we're at Sam's.  So I grabed my daughter and in we go to buy a set of channel locks.  I buy the channel locks come out and then realize that I had left my keys in the truck when I was trying to change the batt. and now I'm locked out.

So now I have to call my wife, she has to leave work and come and open my truck.  After that I was able to remove the old battery and install the new one.

Nothing is every easy???

seems easier..is tehre anything i have to look at to make sure the batt fits in the car???
