Automatic Shifter Knob Removal
« on: March 03, 2004, 09:20:16 AM »
OK, I searched the archives and found no topics on how to get the shifter knob off, so it must be really easy ::)

But, after removing the screw on the front side, the knob can be lifted up only about an inch before it catches on something.  How do I get this thing off ???

An automatic knob is threaded :o

I pulled up on it and spun it a couple of times and it didn't catch on any threads (it spins freely even when it hits the top of whatever it's getting stuck on).  I tried pulling it at 90, 180, and 270 degrees.  I pulled it while pushing on the button.  I gave it a pretty good tug.  I looked through the screw hole for some kind of release.  Nothing.

I found one line about it in the shop manual and it said that the screw should be the only thing holding it on.

How hard do you have to pull on this thing?

Don't pull to hard. Being an auto the button on the handle is locked to something inside the shifter. There must be a release at the bottom of the shaft.

Spin spin spin, it's threaded, count the spins as this is
the adjustment to shift from P to R to D /2/1 and if it's
too high the catch won't hold it in D and it can be bumped
into N or R without the side button getting pushed.

It's a fine thread and will tale 15-20 spins, maybe more

Thanks for the "spin it" info.  You guys were dead on.

The push button mechanism is screwed onto the little activation rod.  A pretty nice design actually.

Now I've got to decide if I want to put an aftermarket knob on.  The shaft looks to be between 14mm and 15 mm which seems typical for aftermarket knobs.

Anyway, Thanks again!
