Sidekick wont start
« on: February 02, 2004, 02:20:56 PM »
1995 Sidekick 1.6L  Cranks and has fire but wont turn over

I pulled up to a stoplight and it had been runnin fine all day... not missing or anything then all of a sudden it just quits. Tryed to start it again but no luck just cranked and cranked. Got it towed and on the way  I released the clutch and tryed to get the motor to try and run... no luck... and I noticed no tach reading when I released the clutch with the key on... got it home checked almost everything... All fuses and coil, anything else I could think of... anyone got any clues?...

Check engine light has been on some time too... was gonna replace O2 sensor today before this all happened...

Could it be the ECM?

My guess would be timing belt. Does it seem to turn over easier?

somewhat... but doesnt hit or anything.... when you first start to crank it sounds like it wants to take off then starts to crank fast like it tries to run but doesnt........ Same thing happened when we was pulling it and i let out on the clutch... sounded like it was gonna take off but didnt....... ill check the timing belt since its never been checked...

If its not the belt could be a fuelpump ar just a silly fuse.

If the cranking of the motor sounds different than before it is probably a timing belt.

My bet is fuel pump, Experienced same thing on two different cars (not zuks though).  Running fine then one just died, and the other wouldn't restart after getting to the store.

Sounds like a fuel problem.  If you have spark then you distributer is working.  If I'm not wrong both the 8 and 16 valve engines the distributer is ran by the cam wich is ran by the belt.

I'd try a fuel filter and then check for fuel pressure.

Oh yea, if you haven't changed your belt it would be a good idea once you get it running.

Where is the filter on a Trackkick and how hard is it to get to and replace?  Thanks.

For troubleshooting, have a buddy turn the car over and pour some gas down the TBI throat. If it starts and runs, its a fuel delivery problem... Is it a 16-valve? I heard of crank sensor problems with them. Water & Dirt are bad...

Good Luck, -Eric

Is is kinda what it looks like on a 96 Tracker.  It's got an extention to lower it when I raised the gas tank.  It's still mounted in the same place.

I beleave it on the right side of the truck.  The picture is from the front looking back.

Turns out the cam seized up and and oil was no longer going to two of the mounts and had burnt them up... is there any bearings or do I only have the options of a new head and cam or getting the head redone...?
