Tracker front diff question
« on: February 25, 2004, 10:51:29 AM »
ok, got 2 front pigs, one with a bad housing and good gears, and one with good housing and bad gears... need to switch em... how does the drivers side inner shaft come out of the housing?? I got the housing out, got the carrier unbolted and it moves a bit but not all the way out, I just need to get that shaft out... Thanks in advance for your help.

you might need a slide hammer to take it out, just like the ones in the rear axle but I'm not possitive.

The couple I've taken apart were a bear to get out. I didn't care what happen to the shafts so I hit them out with a dead blow hammer(usually 2 shots). What's holding it in is a little round split ring on the end of the shaft.

You can also get a pry-bar between the 3-bolt flange, and the case.  Just brutalize the snot out of it, and it'll come out.  Oh, yeah, rotate it while you're doing it.

we managed to get it out... now its just weld the carrier, and put the guts into the good housing.... I just wonder how the welded front end is gonna hold up... I know their not that strong.

Hey, I've snapped the aluminum back lug on the 3rd member clean off, but I've never damaged the innards...

When I busted it, the front diff pivoted back, and up, and the U-Joint carved a hole in the bell housing!  ::)  I patched it with a Red Bull can, and some Silicone Rubber.
