hey ive got a 1988.5 sami
it runs good, but every few weeks it'll start to miss really bad, to the point where i've had to put it in 4low (with the hubs unlocked)1st gear, riding the clutch to get it home cause theres like no power.
ive checked and the choke isnt sticking, it has new plugs, good cap and rotor, leads seem fine too, new fuel filter, valves adjusted umm, havent checked the timing, but the distributer is on there tight so i dont think it could act up only on certain occasions... it would be more consistant if it were the timing
im leaning towards thinking its a carburater problem, but its really hard to bring it somewhere to get checked if its not acting up
but ya, are there any parts notorious for causing this type of problem?

Maybe, your catalytic is making chunks/getting plugged but that would be a more steady lost of power. One sign of this happening is that the egr tube, at the back of the intake manifold, blows off at the valve because of the increased back pressure.

Bad gas?

Another idea is that your cam timing may be off if the keyway is wallowing out on the crank shaft. This would show up in that your ignition timing would be way off. I suppose it could be slipping all over the place if'n its real bad...

I'm going to try to not ramble on but I had the same problem recently on an 87 tinroof. When I bought it the timing was out and had low compression. I found that the woodruff key(some call it a keyway) on the crank timing gear was chewed to no existance. I replaced that and it ran fine just high idle. I replaced the carb with one from e-bay and it ran fine and idled at 800rpm. At this point I thought it was ready for the road. As soon as I left the driveway it did exactly what you described. Then after I pushed it around the block, because it would run only 4-6 seconds at a time, I tinkered with the other carb and put it back on. That ended up curing the problem.
 So what I'm trying to say is it may be the carb, possibly a piece of dirt or faulty emulsion tube or solinoid. Try a carb swap with a carb you know is good or just give it a rebuild. Chances are it needs it anyway.

looks like the woodruff key is probably my problem, he said the carb was just rebuilt, but included two hyundai pony carbs when i bought it whcih leads me to think it was developing problems
