Engine Swap and LSD
« on: February 15, 2004, 12:14:12 PM »
I have not seen any talk about this, of course the car before 97' kick was a 97' Honda Del Sol. And swaps are common in the Honda world. I have a 'I think" 16v 1.6L though I think I read somewhere that the Vatara comes with a 2.0L. so my question forgetting the legalities. Can you put a 2.0L into a 97" kick?
And if I decide to do this I will definately want an LSD. Is the one I have seen on Hawk the right one for a 2WD daily driver? These are possible plans ya never know what I will ask about next.  Thanks.

Any Suzuki engine will fit! the 2.0 4cyl,  2.0, 2.5 and 2.7V6's too but I'm pretty sure that they all need some mods to fit into a specific model.

Ask 97XL7 he put a 2.7 in his 97 2dr. He should be able to answer any specific questions on a swap.

95XL7, is the 2.7L conversion mostly bolt-in or are there a lot of mods that you must do to get it to fit?

If you install it in a 99 or newer it's almost a bolt in,except for a few wires in the dash harness that must be moved to work with the 2.7 engine harness.
But to put it into a 98 or older version it gets quite complicated even for a seasoned mechanic. Some of the things needed are:

2.7 engine and engine wiring harness

Exhaust manifolds and Catylitic converters

Underhood wiring harness from 2.7 donor

Dash harness from donor vehicle(must splice to work)

Radiator(Must make up custom mounts-wider than stock.

Electric fans or fan(stock fan to close to radiator)

Shortened rear driveshaft(depends on Trans. used)

Front driveshaft from XL7 with 1.25" spacer

Plus alot of little stuff, the wiring is the hardest part,i wouldn't do it again if i knew how much of a pain in the ass it would be. In a 99 or newer i would do it in a heartbeat.

OOPS SORRY 95xl7 ;) :-[

I'm still hoping to win the lotto so that I could pay off my creditcard bills, so that I could get my 2.7 swap started. :'(
Thank God I got a 99 so I won't have a huge problem getting it to work. ;D

How about one of the larger engines in a Samurai? Any semi-easy swaps other than the 1.6?

The samurai is one of the most practical designed vehicles for engine swaps. The frames are very strong and are easy to locate any engine in them.

The choice is up to you of retaining the devorced transfercase. I like it for it's gear reduction options.

Here is a few of the motor swaps I have done and or been involved in all for samurais.

toyota 18RG 5spd
toyota corrola 1600 5spd
toyota corrola 1600 twin cam 16V  Auto 4spd
toyota 20r  3spd auto
toyota 22r  4spd auto
toyota 2.4L diesel 5spd toy transfercase

Nissan 2L 5spd
Nissan 2.2L diesel 5spd
Nissan 2.2L diesel  /  custom toyota 4spd auto

Chevy 350 small block  T350 auto
Chevy 400 small block  toy landcruiser tranny/trans
Chevy 454 big block  T400 auto  203case

It's funny to think of all the engine swaps I have done and yet I went to moab last year with a bagged stock 1300 in my zuk with 44 inch boggers!!

44'' boggers were made for samurais!

Well.............I've got a 22re, 5 speed, and transfer case sitting in an exta Samurai frame. Fabbed up motor mounts and x-member, just changed my mind on that project. I would like to keep powertrain Suzuki for simplicity but the Toyota axles are going under the daily driver so the engine/tranny/x-case just might end up there as well
