Another Tire question
« on: February 05, 2004, 02:22:49 PM »
I am looking at a slight upgrade in tires within the next few weeks.  I still have the 205 15s on currently and am going with a 235 75 15.  I've seen the posts on other tires listed but I'm curious about some affordable Buckshot Mudders I've found at a local tire store.  Anybody have any experience with these tires?
The Tracker spends most of its time as a daily driver but will be facing ever increasing offroading soon (rocks, creeks and some mud in the hills...lots of flatland mud/gumbo here at home in the delta).  Thanks,
J

I have never used Buckshot's but alot of people around here do. I have heard that they are good mud tires but that is about it. I have seen them on BIG fullsize trucks in tellico and they do not do very good on the rocks, but bite great in loose dirt and mud.

Petersens did a test a ProComp XTerrains and they said in the mud they suck ass. of corse swampers came in first.  i don't remember the rest.  But if i was DD it i would get some BFG M/T's or ProComp M/T's.  I seen both and they work well.

I've known of a few people over the years that have run with Buckshots, and more that have run with Swampers. People that have run Buckshots, have always switched over to Swampers because of not much cost difference, slightly less noise, and better tire wear. Also, the Swampers just work better.

Where would Swampers be sold at and would they make the smaller 235 15s I'm going to need?
All I'm finding around here are mostly Bridgestone/Firestones, Buckshot, and some generic Regul made tire.  Thanks,
J

I finally found a review on the Bridgestone Dueler M/Ts.  They rated pretty good overall on the 4X4review.com website.  The tires have a good looking aggressive tread pattern and should fit pretty well with the type of driving I'm getting into with the Track.  I'll post a pic of the tire soon as I research how to post pics.
Thanks for your help

You can buy the Swampers through several mail order outfits like Desert Rat Offroad. You look in places like any of the bigger four wheel drive magazines, and you will find ads left and right for companies that sell tires, such as Super Swamper. They do make smaller sizes such as 29-8.50/15 which is close to a 235/75-15.

They also have:
28x8.50 TSL
27x9.50 SSR

The one above was the TSL radial not the SSR.

Thanks for the info on interco.
I've also recently ran across the Dunlop Mud Rover MT tire.  It didn't perform as well as the Dueler in some reviews I've found, but it costs about $40 less/tire.  Decisions Decisions (probably stick with the dueler).
Another question I've had though after this recent research is what size to go with.  I know the 235 75s are the "biggest" you can use with minimal rubbing.  Does the rubbing occur due to the diameter of the tire or the width of the tire?  I'm wondering if I should try to squeeze a 30 x 8.5.  This would get me a little over an inch more clearance with tires and another inch (roughly) with the spacers.  I really don't want to mess with regearing or a suspension lift yet so the biggest I can get with minimal rub and no gearing issues is what I'm looking for.  Help is appreciated...

Too wide or Too tall, both cause rub.
