1999/2003 Vitara/Grand/Tracker
« on: February 02, 2004, 02:51:11 PM »
I have a 1999 tracker, and I am interested in hearing any experiences on lift kits, transfer/axle gear reducer kits, engine performance mods and sporty mufflers that sound good, but are not too loud. I am considering the calmini 2" lift kit and possably the transfer case gear reducing kit. Also, any information on lockers. If, you are only going to do one, is the front or the rear better. Would love to hear from anyone who has any experince with these mods, on the late zuk's..thanks ???

If you got lots of free time, you can read all the posts.
Turbo mufs seem fine.
If you got a few X-tra bucks, order the body lift too. I have the 3inch susp& 3inch body from Calmini Love em both.
I like the ARB lockers, on/off when you need it, less wear and tear but thats what I got just in the rear, so maybe i'm bias.
T-case gear, can't go wrong there, Thats on my to-do list.
5:83 R&P Good.
But these are my thoughts and what I've experienced.
But there is alot of people that have done soo much longer. I'm only 1 year into this and learning everyday.

What are you going to do with it?  Is it a daily driver?  Extreem wheeler?  Mud, rocks ...

I also have the 3"x3" Calimini lifts.  T-case gears, 5.83, skids, ARB's front and rear.

All on 32/11.5R15 MTR's.

I have a 2002 Tracker with;

1.  RRO 2" suspension lift

2.  ARB rear locker/compressor

3.  15X7" wheels

4.  235X15 AT tires

5.  RRO Rocker panel sliders/guards (a must!)

6.  Calminis rear bumber add-on (mount for high-lift jack)

7. CB & Ham radios

8.  Garmin GPS

Next:

1.  RRO 2" body lift

2.  30 or 31" tires

3.  Transfer case lower gears

4.  Calmini front limited slip (they say they have one that will fit the newer models)

5.  5.83 R&P

I use the Tracker for a daily driver and moderate off road.  Been to the Jeep Safari last year and am going again this year.  Primarily run 3.0 trails but have done some 3.5 at the JS.  So far have amazed Jeep guys with where it will go!

Is your Tracker a 2 door or 4 door.  The 2 doors are almost the same as the pre-99's but the 4 door is whole new beast.

Its a 2 dr.  Some of the earlier stuff will work, buts its a case by case basis.  The RRO suspension lift is the same and I think the body lift is too except for added parts for the strut brace.

Mine is a 2001 model ,Sidekick (Vitara in Europe). You can find all the mods I did in the address listed below. You ll also find useful info in  recent topics "sidekick-lockers-aluminium front casing","2inch lift" and "t-case upgrade",page 2
About your thoughts....
the 2" Calmini lift is the best from what I read in here.I have the Calmini 3"susp+3" body kit.The 2" susp is good. The 3" is better but thats if you are going to add winch bumbers and in other words extra weight. The t-case kit is also good. Its in my to-do list too.About lockers ,as I said previously you ll find info in the recent topic "sidekick-lockers-aluminium front casing".My advise, even though I m a newbie in here,is that before starting any mods (especially those that include suspension lifts),first of all try to replace the stock front alum.casing and 3rd member. If you dont want to do that now,a more safe option would be to start with just a body lift, bigger tires and 5,83:1 rings and pinions.Next you can add the t-case kit and lockers. But again ,the best mod to start with according to my opinion is to replace the  front casing-3rd member, with steel ones.I m sure it will save you money that can be used for other mods.

What wheels are you running? Did you have any problems with front caliper clearance?
Being stupid but what is RRO ???

cheers

Answers to a couple questions asked.

1.  With the 15X7" wheels did they clear the brake calipers?  With the standard offset, 3.75" I believe thye will big time.  The wheels I bought used have an offset of 3.25" and still interfered with caliper a little.  I ground of about 1/16" from the caliper and then they fit.  But, they tires on the driver's side rubs on the frame on the rear side at full lock.  When I go to 30" tires, I will have get wheels spacers or new wheels with less offset.

2. I don't have the 2" body lift yet but afetr helping a friend put the same lift on a 97 Tracker, the only difference I could see was that the strut reeinforcement bar that runs between the struts on the top would need something.  Maybe some who has done this body lift would have more info or a call to RRO would get the info.

I like my Grand Vitara.  It has big tires.  I can drive in the dirt and on big rocks.  It is very fun.  You should try it too.  You will like it.  It is fun.

Take the front portion of the drop top and add it to the XL7 to get the best of all worlds. It's the same body, so why not?

The front soft top portion over front passengers, then a copy, but bigger, for the rear seat area.

That's a plan I have for another year.
