Where the hey is the oil coming from?
« on: January 29, 2004, 09:35:38 PM »
I have an oil leak that I can't find on my '89 Jimny. We swapped the rear main already and it doesn't look like its coming from the oil pan. I can't see any other place it would be coming from? Any suggestions?

If it's not a real bad leak, I suggest using Valvoline Max Life oil. It can cure a slow leak, not to mention it's really good quality oil.

Thanks for the suggestions. Also, I have a lot of grease coming from my left wheel area. I'm sorry I dunno the technical term. :-[  The hub? Its the rounded portion near where the wheel attaches.  My question: is there a seal here or is it just access grease?

One the front it will be a bad seal letting Bearing grease out, or you have a break fluid leak. I can nor remember if the rear is lubed by the diff fluid or if it runs sealed bearings.

There's an inner axle seal in there that may be letting differential gear oil into the knuckle that houses the Birfield joint. That oil can water down the grease in the birfield causing it to leak out past the rubber seal between the back of the knuckle and the 'round' part of the axle housing.  Sounds like it's time to do the front knuckle tear down and check things out.

Several vendors have kits w/ all of the seals and stuff. Or, as Zig mentioned, brake fluid. You need to determine where, or post some pics and we'll try to help.

All I had to do was swap a felt-like seal. Don't know if that is the birfield or not?  Also..another one for ya.
There is oil coming from my header. I tipped my Jimny a couple weeks back. It just started coming out from the header though. Is this normal after a tip or is something else up?
