Well, I initially I thought it was the pan gasket or a loose bolt causing the leak.  I stopped by a local (recommended) tranny shop and they took a look underneath.  Fluid is coming out of the front of it somewhere.  Estimated charge because it is a "toyota" auto. tranny is $1,500 for everything.  Surely he jests.  I have to ask what you guys think.  Seems like I could get a new or rebuilt for that kind of dough, but I'm a newbie to this stuff.  
He said the transmission will have to be pulled and looked at to make sure they find the leak and fix properly...90 day leak warranty.  I'm gonna try one more shop also.  Comments/Questions?

It's a Toyota Tranny? I've got the same thing you have and it didn't come from a Toyota, it's from GM and $1500.00 is way too much to fix a leak.

Not completely sure yet about the toyota tranny.  He got off the phone with some "parts guy" and said "yep, its a toy...$1500.  That's the problem with buying foreign cars."  I kind of thought he just didn't like imports.  It's gotta be cheaper than that.
It might be worth a stop by the Chevy dealer next week as well.  I've got to do something soon as I've got a weekend of offroading planned for early march.  Thanks,

What you need is a new seal, not a new transmission.

Whatever you do, do not - DO NOT - use anything in the transmission that is advertized to swell seals and stop a leak. It will swell internal seals, as well as external seals, and make that $1500 repair bill necessary. I speak from costly experience.

Well tell Mr. Badwrench that if it's a 3-speed it's a 3L30 or TH-180 like came in Chevettes and a rebuild kit is maybe $150.00 more or less without the torque converter. He's trying to take you for a costly ride. Run, don't just walk from this shop!

Some sort of new seal/gasket is what I was hoping it would amount to.  I bottomed out on a turn row ditch and its been a slow leak ever since.
I'm gonna try to crawl around under it again this weekend and see if I can trace the leak.  Maybe it is something I can fix.  If not, I'll have to "outsource" it to a local shop.  
Shoulda paid more attention to dad when I was younger.

TN, its a 4 speed but I think you're right.  He saw me comin'!  I'll just keep adding fluid for a few more days until I find a reputable shop.
DS, I had somebody try to talk me into some of that Lucas oil products leak stop crap.  It just made me nervous thinking about what I'd be adding in there.  I passed on his kind and very cost effective advice.

Kind of reminds me of about 10 years ago I went in AAMCO to get an estimate for my insurance company and there was some older lady writing a check for $2500 to repair the tranny in her Honda. I saw the car, it wasn't worth $1500 and I just shook my head in disgust. Their estimate to repair mine? $2100 and believe me they didn't do it. I took it to a local shop and got it done for $400.00. How do these transmission guys look at themselves in the mirror every morning?

The auto trans has a big rubber "O Ring"
around the front between the bell housing
and the trans body, this is what is leaking,
mines done it since 1989, and I just keep
putting fluid in it, about 1 quart per month.
