Hard to start after sitting for 10 minutes
« on: February 02, 2004, 01:19:35 PM »
My 90 Tracker can be hard to start after it sits for 10 minutes or so.  Today I drove it home 30 miles and stopped at Target.  10 minutes later when I tried to start it it almost caught, but not quite.  Then it would crank and crank the next 4 times I tried to start it.  After that it started with a little coaxing.  When it is cold it always fires up instantly.  It has done this before.  Any ideas?

Maybe it's time to change your fuel filters?  ???

Carry some tools with you.  When it doesn't start check to see if there's spark.  Next put a little gas in the intake.

When you crank it does it hit at all or just turn over?

It just cranks for a few minutes.  Then it starts a bit reluctantly.

Usually a hard start condition is opposite of what you guys are thinking with Fuel Injected vehicles. With out seeing the vehicle I bet your injector in the throttle body is leaking down when it sits. The warm engine and raw fuel is flooding it. To test the theory when it happens stop cranking hold the gas to the floor then it should crank over. When you put the gas to the floor the throttle position sensor tells the injector to shut off and it will start because no additional fuel is being added and flooding the vehicle. Now my Disclaimer,  I build and drag race 5.0 Mustangs and tune and modify computers for the race community.

Thanks for the insight.  After driving a 5.0 Stang a Zuk must seem incredibly slow!  :)

I usually keep a Jeep around the house but putting it in the car trailer with my Mustang for races was just to heavy for my new motorhome so I sold the Jeep and replaced it with the Tracker. For winter driving and for pulling behind the motorhome. I really enjoy it but the lack of power compared to the Jeep 4cyl. I don't really notice because of the weight difference. I just wish more stuff(aftermarket) was available for the Tracker. I drive daily in nice weather a 500rwhp 5.0 and run the True Street (FunFordWeekend) series and IHRA events in my area on opposite weekends when no Ford event is happening. I already measured and a 5.0 would fit really nice in the Tracker but instead decided to work on a Turbo kit for the 1.6 to have something to do when my shop business is slow. In my area I went to alot of truck events and the Sami with small block Chevy are in 90% of them and have never seen a TracKick with a V8 yet. Maybe the cost of a TracKick in good shape is yet to much to modify.
