adapt 1300 ac to 1600 block???
« on: January 28, 2004, 06:37:58 AM »
Hi all, my first post/question.

I am installing a 16valve engine in my 88.5 sami and want to keep the r12 ac compressor. I will use a pulley/clutch from Swift/Metro to mate to serp belt and pulley on 1600 block. The problem is the 1600 mounting bracket doesn't match the 1300 ac compressor and the 1300 ac bracket won't mate to 1600 bock. Has anyone modified/fabricated a bracket to mate these two together? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

TIA

Shouldn't be any big deal if you have a welder or at least access to one and possibly access to a pretty heavy duty bender or just weld it all together and skip the bender entirely.  1/4" x1" or so cold rolled should be plenty to do the job with.  Maybe bump it up to 1/4"x1 1/4" or 1 1/2" if you need a little wider bracket.  You'd have to trim it and taper the tabs that the bolts that go through the compressor go through to fit.  Pretty simple as far as a fabrication project goes.  Just make sure that you keep things lined up straight with the belts or they're going to wear out fast, come off easy, and generally do bad things.

You also should use a drill press of course but if you're really really careful you *might* be able to get away with using a hand drill.  Not recommended though.

If I'm not mistaken, I beleive the compressor is just about the same between the 1.3 and 1.6. I was unaware of the block holes being different. You might want to try the mount from the 1.6 for the a/c compressor, it should work. Also, if that doesn't work, have the a/c flushed and put the 1.6 compressor on the motor with the 1.3 hoses.

Thanks Guys!
I have checked with an aftermarket supply house and they said that the 1300 compressor will not fit the 1600 brackets. The 1300 upper bracket looks like it will fit if I grind out some of the center gusset to clear the exhaust manifold and the lower bracket lines up on two of the three holes, will need to weld a tab on bottom to catch the other hole. If I am lucky, the pulleys will line up. Won't know until the AC clutch assembly arrives on monday.
