Water in Oil
« on: January 21, 2004, 06:55:43 AM »
Went and looked at a samurai that was for sell.  I drove it around and it ran fine.  Seemed to have pretty good pep.  Popped the hood and took off the valve cap and there was some water condensed on it.  What could the cause be and how bad is this?
Thanks

If it's just condensation, it can come from the vehicle either sitting a lot without being driven, or being driven for very short trips where the motor doesn't heat up enough.  That is considered normal. Pull the dipstick and check the oil.  If it's got any brownish white gunk on it, it probably has motor problems.  Also, take the radiator cap off when the motor is cold and start the motor.  If you're blowing compression into the water jacket, it will blow water back out through the radiator neck.  The other thing is do a compression test.   All the cylinders should be within about 10% of each other.  If they vary more than 10% or so, the motor may have problems.

The dipstick looked normal.  I think its been sitting there for a while and not drove much.  The guy selling it was saying that it was quaker state oil and it just condensed like that.  What kind of cost would i be looking at if i had to replace a head gasket?
Thanks

If it were just a head gasket, the cost if you do it yourself is under $100.  If the head is shot (warped or cracked), you can get a rebuilt one with a gasket kit for $250.

Well i went ahead and bought it and i had to drive about 60 miles on the interstate to get it home.  It never missed a beat.  The next day after work, i checked to see if any water would blow out the radiator neck.  Nothing at all.  I also checked the dipstick again and there was nothing but oil on it.  I checked the valve cap before and after i started it and i didn't see anything on it either.  I'm planning on changing the oil in it and seeing how it looks.  Would you still recomend i take it in and have a compression test done on it?  I apperciate all the help and info.

If the water you saw in the oil fill cap
were the icky brown sludge #$&|removethispart|@ I
would have the compression checked
or go get a guage and do it yourself,
probably cost the same or less, but if
it was just beads of water fagetaboudit
