Ignition Timing
« on: January 11, 2004, 01:29:30 PM »
If my ignition timing was off, Would i notice a lack of power? My tracker seems really underpowered. I just don't think its running right. I have to floor it to go anywhere. But if the ignition timing was off wouldn't it run pretty crapily? I don't know any help is appreciated. Thanks Andrew

Yes retarded timing can cause poor performance although ignition timing does not normally wear out of it's inital factory setting

It's more likely starving or constipated .  If  the air, fuel delivery or exhaust is restricted you will experience a signifigant power loss   things to chect air filter fuel filter (normal maintance) catalytic converter  and muffler.
There are other possible causes  but these are the most comon
Hope that helps.

Possibly a duff 02 sensor, especially if you've been wading.

Yeah that does help, but i just did the air filter over the summer and the fuel filter last week. Also the head was done on the motor so I don't know if the timing was changed then. There is a ticking sound that comes from what sounds like the intake manifold at around 2000 to 2800 rpms. I initally thought it was a plug wire arching but I replaced the Plugs wires cap and rotor and it didn't stop....so It kind of leads me to believe that it is the timing. Any more input would be great. Andrew

If it was an o2 sensor wouldn't the check engine light come on? I don't know just wondering.

Not necessarily, they do age and they also suffer from contamination on the outside.  If the head has been off then both the ignition and the valve timing could be out. The valve lash may also need readjusting.

Valve timing isn't out, I just did the timing belt last week. Also i have the 16 valve motor which is an interference motor therefor if the valve timing was out there would be even bigger problems. I had the head professionally rebuilt and if that is the problem im' going to be super pissed. So I guess its time to check the o2 sensor. Thanks

You could be a cam tooth off either direction and it would still run.  Might even sound ok at an idle.

But if its the same before and after the belt was done.  Then most likely you can count it out.  Still might be worth a shot messing with the distributer.

I have no idea. gonna do some work on it tomorrow. Gonna ohm the o2 sensor and see how that is. And work my way around from there.
