My friend is looking to buy a Sammy(because SJ410's are really hard to find 8)).  He found an 88 but he doesn't know if it is a 88 or an 88.5.  How do you determine it?  Please somebody help.

Very subtle ways. I think it's has a 4 spoke steering wheel, and square vent dash layout rather than a 3 spoke and round vents. There is also the carrier in the front axle (??) and the transmission has a different od ratio (??).

Both of my 88's have the tree spoke steering wheels and the round vents, the taller 5th gear (you can tell that by the drain plug, socket type not the hex or 3/8 rachet hole) and the early has the good four pin diff's.

88.5's have a negatively arched extra rear leaf to help the stability. 88's do not.

I am told that the brown interior is exclusive to the 88.5s.  I dont know that as fact or fiction however.
