Front Solid Axel Ideas anyone???
« on: January 04, 2004, 02:24:34 PM »
I am thinking of eventually putting a solid axel up front in my Kick. I know Calmini is coming up with a kit sometime here, but I am impatient and depending on the money situation I may try and do it this summer, at the end of next year. Would it be cheaper/the same price as the Calmini to have one cutom made or should I just save up for the Calmini sytem.  What axel should I think about. I was kinda throwin around the idea putting a Dana 44 up front and rear. But they are spendy and I know you can find Yota axels cheap and bulid them up pretty strong. Would you go full width or have them narrowed? What are pros and cons on either a leaf spring set up or coil setup?
A buddy of mine back home had a guy in town put a high pinion Dana 44 up front under his Nissan( it was originally IFS) and also had him put a 5 speed in at the same time. The guy charged him $4000, is this a reasonable price? It was a leaf spring setup and I am sure the cost would prob be application specific, but I am just curious. Just some ideas for me to think about and any ideas are welcome including ideas to beefen up the stock Kick IFS. Thanks

engineering and making work cost money.  I would chop a jeep front/ rear suspension, weld it in my truck and be done with it.  Some have 4.88 gears, might be aftermarket?? I'm not sure. Cherokees have coils instead of leafs.  Leafs are easyer to lift couple inches.   Also wide axles are to my liking, but your local law enforcement may follow you around and make your day miserable.

lots, but you will probably need new rims and you might be playing with a bit of difference either way there.  Yeeps should not be much wider, but I cant give you exact dimensions

Go jeep axles, coil springs and four link
control arms, $4000 = too much but I
build all my own stuff, so I don't pay
those kinds of prices

I think that a dana 30 from a CJ narrow track would be just about right and cheap to boot

Yes they are close, like 2" or so,
that would be perfect

ya, what about yata axles?  they are going under sammy and look narrow.  why not a tracker.  just make the rear a ful-floter and get long-feilds for the front.  just do not buy the 5.71:1 gears.  lata stu

Yes narrow track Jeep axles are 1.5-2" widwe than the Kick rear axles. I looked at doing this once and then crenged at the thought of a Jeep part on my Kick. Not to mention the all of the Shit I would get from the Jeep guys in the club.

Oh Yea, be carefull of VTD's (vehicular transmitted diseases). Transplanting a tainted Jeep part onto a Suzuki my cause your vehicle to spontainously get stuck on easy trails or break down for no reason.

Beware, Jeep parts are just a collection of other parts put together, either stock, aftermarket, or built. It's the same for Suzuki's and any other manufacturer. The hardware is not of their original design.  Like anyone in a business, it's best to minimize cost on the 'adaptability' of the collection of parts to make it work.

Hopefully you do know that the only axle under a Jeep which could be considered a Jeep axle is the AMC 20. Basically all other axles are Dana Spicer. Dana Spicer is a differential manufacturer. So if you considered a D30 for a front axle, upgrade it in the axles and joints, and never worry about breaking it.

Build your vehicle to handle your type of driving and terrain which you do it in. When someone rips on you about using certain parts on your build, then just explain that as mod'd, as cost, as the way you drive like you stole it, don't need a tow vehicle and flat bed trailer, it's cost effective and still cheaper than what they claim to be better.  If not, just have fun and don't take what someone's rippen on you personally. As you can always, just drive away, whereas they may need a tow or ride home.

What comes to mind is the recent ride where the YJ broke a D35 axle shaft and his 33-35" tire was coming out. The yellow Tracker, which climbed the hill, was able to drive home, and drive to work the next day.
