WOO HOO ... I FINALY BROKE A CV JOINT
« on: January 04, 2004, 12:28:51 PM »
I was out wheeling for the New Years and I finaly broke a CV.
I didn't hear it, I just stopped going up stuff, looked out the
window and no dirt getting kicked up by the front wheels.

so I just mellowed out a little bit and kept on wheelin, I think
I toasted the cage in the CV so I will have to dig out a spare
and replace it, I might have a trick front replacement for Moab
if things go right.  ;D

Does this mean that the CV joints are of high qaulity?  Last summer I had the CV joint boots replaced on my rig.  They were only the second pair to put in after the originals.

Wecome to the club.  When mine went it was also quiet.  Just starting getting stuck in simple stuff.

When something breaks, at least it should make a big bang so you get some gratification out of it.

So what am I going to find in there??? a ground up
bearing cage, or did you bother to take yours apart???

Quality I guess they are good, this was an origional CV,
the other side was clicking like a worn Birf so I replaced
it with a donor from a motorhome pusher  ;)

I'm with lil_truck.  I like that satisfying crashing sound.  When I did a 7600 Rpm clutch dump in my mustang, I knew I blew something, and I knew which part of the differential gave way.

I busted the u joint in my old Dodge the fist day i drove it to school in high school. I had never really drive a stick before and was on a hill and didnt want ot roll back. I had it first gear witch is a super low granny gear. I didnt have my clutch/ gas timing right and rev'ed it up to god knows what and dropped the cluctch. I got a smige of scratch from the tires and a loud bang as the ujoint let go, folled by a wam wam wam wam as the drive saft spun around under the rig. The shaft had a boot on the slip joint in the middle so it didnt fall out. My dad was not impressed, the flailing drive shaft bent it self, the gas tank, and did someother minor damage. So we had to replace the whole shaft. I definelty new I broke something, it sounded like a gun shot going off.

but the cage that keeps your balls together,

Were you wheelin it pretty hard, how hard is it to break one? I have heard they are kinda weak so I try and take it easy, and not get too outa control.

I was just out having fun and it let go,
I think driveline shock is the killer, not
power, just the snap of the clutch.

I was going into a mud hole head first and a little to the left.  Most my weight was on the front left tire.  CV just couldn't hold up.

hmmmm... Thats why I am pondering on saveing up the dough and putting a solid axel up front. Ideally I would like to put Dana 44 front and rear but that would be spendy. Think about this lead me to think up a new thread ;D

I thought that i would be breaking front end stuff like crazy but i have only blown up a front third member.  I ripped the boot off the CV once and wheeled all day in deep mud then went wheeling again a few weeks later and i never broke it.  But at least i was trying.  lata stu

Wild,
Welcome to the club :P Be sure to get a stock replacement from Suzuki or a used one from a bone yard. The Auto parts store rebuilds are shit. I have literally shattered on in about 15' of puting in in 4x4.

P.S. Buy the way, if you didn't here that filimiar CV SNAP, you arent hitting it hard enough.  :P
