Is it difficult to change front manual locking hub
« on: November 19, 2003, 06:26:11 AM »
I ordered a set of Warn Premium Hubs for my '95 sidekick.  I'd like to know if it's something I can do myself?  If so does anyone know how it's done or have a reference on how it's done?

Thanks

I think it's about as simple as 2 steps.

step #1, unbolt old hub (~6 bolts) 10mm I think too.

step #2, bolt on new hub (~6 bolts)

We swapped out our auto hubs for manual hubs and thats about all we did.

Yep that's basically it (what Natebert said).  The only addition with the warn premiums is that you bolt the main housing on with the 6 above mentioned bolts.  Then you have to bolt the center section in with 6 small allen head stainless or chrome bolts that come with the hub kit.  Get some blue threadlock for those 6 little ones.  The big ones maybe get new bolts and lockwashers.  Mine are socket head there, not sure if they all are as I haven't paid attention, but I did replace a few of em that were kinda rusty looking and the lack of clearance there suggests that only a socket head bolt would work anyway.

I haven't personally had a problem, but Eric Bewley and a few other people here have had the 6 big bolts come loose on their rigs and lost a hub (leading to an unwanted 120 dollar purchase to of a new set to replace the one that's missing if you can't find it.)  Make sure you torque them properly and if they seem a little loose going in definitely look at replacing em.

If you have the means (such as the handy dandy safety wire drilling jig) look at something like that as a solution, otherwise at least use blue threadlock on em.   Alternately I guess you could use studs with holes for cotter pins or something else that provides a physical locking mechanism.  The clearances might be a bit tight there for that to work though so I'd say test fit one before you buy a whole bunch because they won't be cheap.

It's not like you're going to throw a wheel if you lose the hub but it could make your planned weekend 4x4ing come to an early end when you get there and can't lock the hub.

Hope that helps ya out.

Does it matter if the the hubs are in the lock or unlock position?  I think my left front hub is broken so I'm unsure if it's in lock or unlock.

Nope doesn't matter.  When you lock/engage them it basically is a cam type setup that pushes in on a splined sleeve that when pushed in locks the hub to the axle.  Just don't let it shoot off and hit ya in the head from extra spring tension.  (wouldn't worry about that happening too much it's a pretty weak spring..)

Ok, I'm in the middle of installing my warn premium hubs on my 95'kick with manual locking hubs.  I just want to know if anyone else has them, because, it appears to be missing some screws.  Namely the ones the screw the cap (the dial mechanism) onto the main body of the hub.  It only came with one thumbscrew type hex screw.  When there's six places to insert screws.  I hope Warn wasn't expecting to use my old ones because mine don't use those type thumbscrew type hex screws.  Did anyone else have this problem? ???

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like Warn screwed up and shorted you some parts, probably would be fastest to go match em up at a hardware store, you'll probably have to get stainless too if you want em to match, no big deal really though, I'm pretty sure any decent Ace Hardware with an ok Metric selection should have what you need.

The Ace by me is pretty good about having graded socket head stuff.  Socket head stuff is usually what it says it is, the hex head stuff on the other hand you should always check.  The Feds have really cracked down on falsely graded bolts so if it says it's a 12.9 or a 10.9 it usually is these days.  (Except a stainless bolt where they use different grades altogether).

In any case the 6 little 3mm x 10mm (guessing there, don't quote me) outer bolts probably aren't seeing enough of a load that it would matter even if they weren't graded.

I sent the company an email about the missing hex screws and they're sending them to me for free.  However, I had to run to the hardware store and buy the missing ones anyways because I couldn't really drive the truck with everything all apart.  Anyhow, the install went without a hitch and I love the new look of them.  Thanks for everyone's help.
