Remote Tracker part 2
« on: November 07, 2003, 09:07:03 AM »
I just got the camo model.  I am taking it to work Monday and a co worker will take pix for me with her camera.

I hope to get some action shots, some flex shots, and some shots in the air.......just like Mike Hagen!

So there ya go Hagen, you aren't the only one who can put a tracker in the air. ;D :P :D
The Zuke is on its way out.  Getting a vehicle that will behave and be supported by the dealer.

Ok, I just got back from tipping a few cold ones, got this rig out of the box and WTF?????????Noooooooo IFS?  How am I gonna get the suspension flex that everyone craves?

Oh, I forgot batteries so I am raiding the remotes, smoke alarm etc to I can see what this thing will do. :o

***************Update(**************

Had to go to the store as the 9V in the smoke alarm was DOA...........soooooooooooo..........

Here we go.

1.  Low end torque is virtually non existent.  Runs better wide open on smooth parking lots.
2.  There is  a h/l switch that controls the  speed of the motor.  Moving it to low just makes it slower.
3.  Won't climb a 5.5 inch 30 degree asphalt grade in my parking lot, no matter if I rock crawl it or take a flying run.
4.  Turns only in reverse and has a pull to the left, some deft linkage adjustment might cure this.
5.  Takes 6 aa and one 9V battery.  Lots of weight here.
6.  IF you touch the wire antenna, the rig stops.  Must not like the moisture-on-the-skin thing.
7.  No IFS.  Flexing is out of the question here short of some serious chassis mods.
8.  Fake v-8 engine is gay looking; more appropriate in a full size truck than a trucklet like this.
9.  Reverse is half speed of forward.
10.  No tracker decals anywhere......just some nutz-o stuff.
11. Ground clearance is just so-so.....mine got stuck on a pine cone.
12.  No headlights......thus why I got stuck on a pine cone at night.

That's it.  I will play around with this and probably either break it or give it to the salvation army.  Or, if I am really motivated after studying for yet another OS certification, I might yank the motor and see if I can give it some testosterone to get really airborne.  Might try to rig up a steering device or at least figure out the toe in settings so this thing will track straight.
What the hell, it was all of 10 bucks and I spent more on beer tonight than this toy. :o

hahah sounds like quite the rig  :P

All this RC talk got me thinking.

I got a Team Losi RC off road truck. This thing kicks ass (even though it has 4 corner Indi suspension  :-/ )  I want to find (or make) a shell that looks like a tracker to fit over it.

The shells on these trucks are thin plastic, and when you buy them they are clear so you can paint them any way you want.  8)

I think it would be dope to make it look like a tracker. I'll paint it up just like mine, it'll be my mini me.   ;D

samurai_hamster,
I agree that the vitals of this thing are pretty lame but to find a tracker toy and for $10, I'm pretty happy. I really wanted it for looks anyway. I've stripped the decals, bought some black paint and will use my testors decal maker software to make it look presentable. I agree the fake V-8 blows and mine is already removed.

The concept here is good.......I like the body but already I am thinking of junking the Chairman Mao motor and getting one from one of those balls out remote cars, say a 9.6v unit or perhaps a B&D cordless drill?  ANyway, I think I know a guy who can fab up a driveshaft and if I can build a Tcase, I can getr real 4WD on this thing.  run a straight axle, presto!  There's the locker.   Fix up a servo motor from someplace and presto again, I have real steering  ;D
Tomorrow I am junking the v-8 motor.  Its just overkill here.  Might even gain some speed?  Less weight?

I tried to launch it off a 2x6.......it was uh.........well kinda weak.  Played holy hell just keeping it on there.   I found a large sheet of plywood and a cinder block.  Tried to get some speed going to get a nice launch.......and plop.  Ok, I find a hill, get the thing going but its geared in such a way that it won't freewheel enough to really gather speed.......another plop.  So much for redlining this thing.  Finally, in a fit of frustration as well as the inate male desire to "see what'll she do" , I took it up stairs, got a decent run......and let it go end over end over end.  Oddly, the only thing that broke was one of the header pipes off that god awful motor.  No biggie.  Its outta there tomorrow anyway.

Oh to be a kid again..............

Sorry Mike Hagen.....looks like you are still the air king........for now anyway!

Ok, I tore this thing down........wow.........talk about weak stuff.   The motor is like those you see in kids clocks or something and there isn't enough room in there with all the gears to really beef this thing up.  ALso the hi/lo range is a joke!    I figured high is about 50:1 ratio ( I was too pie eyed to count ALL the gears) and low is about 65:1  no wonder this thing maxes out so early.   I tried to fit a plastic gear from an old football clock I had but no go.  The center hole is too big for the shaft and I could not get the glue to sit up enough to hold it on the shaft.  At least its a locker......sort of......uh....well ok is a straight axle anyway!

Can't do anything with the steering, not enough room in the chassis to put a servo motor to make it really steer.

Only thing I managed to do was yank the dorky chrome motor, the over size bumper, and I put 3./4 spacers to lift it a bit.  So now I have a .75 lift.  Pretty good huh?  My first lifted tracker!

I might try to see if I can wire up a 14.4 bat pack in there to replace the 6 1.5 AA bats. Right now that's 9.0 volts and I bet this critter would really hum with 14.4 in there.  LIke MIke Hagen says, redline all the time.  Just gotta figure out how to do it.

I also figured out some neat slides.......get it on concrete, go balls out forward then slam the trigger on the control piece into reverse........you can get about 3 inches of slide that way.

hey, you guys should see this vid, it's taken in australia, and is about monster RC trucks. They take the videos, and give it sound effects to make it seem like they are "real" trucks crawling over real rocks. LOL (the vids are kinda big though)

ya man, my Team Losi truck kicks serious but.

I launched it over a 3 foot x 3 foot power box on my old lawn.

I used a small piece of wood propped up on a brick for the ramp. Phat air!

If you get an electric one though (like i have) make sure you buy at least 2 batteries because they only last about 12 minutes.  So when ones being used you can have the other on the charger for non stop action  ;D
