Something to think about when buying tires.
« on: November 15, 2003, 05:47:21 AM »
American owned companies pay 3 times as much taxes than foreign companies, helping to ease the tax burden on US citizens.

Food for thought...

Tire Brand Name       Nationality

Cooper                       American
Goodyear                  American
Kelly Springfield       American
Mastercraft       American
Dunlop                       Australia
BF Goodrich       France
Michelin                       France
Firestone                       Japan
Toyo                       Japan

FWIW, I run Mastercraft.

I don't understand how US companies paying 3x
taxes eases the burden on the people in the US,
most taxes are passed along to the consumer so
I would think we are paying more tax for US made
tires??? Or did I mis-understand your statement???

Yeah so did I, untill I found out that it's a french owned company  >:(.  This put aside any reluctance I had to purchase these over the Good Year mt's that I was also considering. :P

Mastercraft is made by Junkstone which is owned by Bridgestone which is Japanese.

One thing you're forgetting is that a lot of the foreign owned tire companies have their tires made in the USA, which provides Americans jobs and keeps money in the USA through their salaries and purchase of supplies, energy...and taxes.  Besides, what nationality is Suzuki?

It's not that cut and dried.....

It sure isn't.  Take boob tubes for instance.  RCA is owned by the French, Zenith is a pawn of LG electronics.  Although the names are American, none of the boob tubes they make are produced here.
By contrast, Toshiba, a Jap concern, is making tv's in Lebanon TN with american made picture tubes (by way of Matsushita aka Panasonic)

Also, go look at the parts content on a lot of so called Japanese cars, you will be surprised to see the percentage of US content is often higher than the percentage of US content in "american" brands, like Dodge, Chevy and Ford.

Welcome to the world economy................ :-/

Mastercraft is a Cooper product along with Trendsetter
and Hercules. They also make the Pep-Boys lines of tires.
At least they make their Enforcer MT Tire.

the only BFG tires I had were the lifesaver radials on a 1975 Cordoba.  They were a bit rough and I had to get two replaced due to belt separation.

my dad had some BFG on his T/A, like the ones that come from the factory and they seemed to do ok, but were also a bit rough riding.

This is the only experience we've had in my family with BFG tires.

On the other hand the Junkstone 721...................well that deserves its own website due to all the problems it caused ut.

I may be going OT, but I think it's important.

You can go to  http://www.howtobuyamerican.com and read a bit.  I recently seen this guy on a few news/debate shows, from OReily to MSNBC’s Economy Watch .  He makes a lot of sense.  The "free market" capitalists that were on the same shows had some pretty hollow reasons for their pro-global trade stance. It only makes sense to Wall Street how cares only about a bottom line and profit, not national securtity and citizen's welfare.  Buying too mush foriegn goods and services is the reason our trade defict continues to rise, and our standard of living continues to be whittled away.

Funny, GM making a car in Korea and selling it here results in more taxes and revenue remaining in the US than a Toyota built in the US.  It's more important to buy American owned than American made.  But American owned and made is the best choice.

I ordered his book from Amazon and can't wait to read it.  If buying more "American" goods can help dig us out of fiscal hole we are in, then I'm going to change my buying habits.

Except for Canadian goods.  We have a good trade balance with them.  Canadians are good people, and having a strong border neighbor/ally is important.  Besides, their cost of living is higher than ours!

Sorry to digress like this, and I didn't know it would lead to a great tire debate.  Just thought I would share what I thought was important to our nation.
