Oil filter again?
« on: October 15, 2003, 05:32:28 AM »
Please forgive me.  I know there was a discussion about oil filters while ago.  I searched for it, but no luck. :-[
I need to know what oil I should use and who makes the best filter.  I put 53 miles a day on my little rig, and it currently has 90k miles on it.  I have been following sticker under the hood until now.
Also, I am taking a trip down to McGuire AFB/ Fort Dix (Nj) and will be there for 6 weeks.  Does anyone know any cool trails to explore while I am there?

I use wal-mart brand they seam to be perty good for the money and a little bit better than fram, wix is the best if you can find them I think that napa gold filters are wix that would be a good choice if you want to spend the money, also kendal moter oil in my book is the best oil but it is a back east oil company and has to be ordered here in oregon, so i run syn. blend from wal-mart!

I think that on the oil filter study I saw Purolater's especially the Pure One was a good one, That's what I use.  As far as oil, I've been using Castrol for about 12 years now with good results, never had a motor go bad yet!!!!! ;D    Dave

I meant viscosity or number.  Like 5w 30, 10w 40, etc.. Is the oil filter for an SJ410 the same as a Samurai?

;DNAPA Gold filters, made by WIX.  In a pinch,  use purolator.

For the motor oil......its mobil 1 baby!

However, I have heard good results from Amsol users too.

I used to use Fram's Double Guard Oil Filter DG2951 but they stop importing those into Canada.... (sighs)  :(

I now use Fram PH2951 for now until I can find something better.

As for oil I use "Mobil 1" 5W30.  I've just started using synthetic oil this year.  No going back...the stuff is great and worth the extra money.  Although I wonder about Castrol Syntec...

I was thinking about Castrol syntec too, if you try it let me know what you think. ;D  I chickened out at the last moment, I looked at my wallet, saw what was inside, looked at the price of the Mobil One, then looked at the price of the regular Castrol dino juice I've been using for years and well......You know......  One of these days I might switch.  I've heard that Castrol syntech isn't a fully synthetic oil like Mobil One.  Has anybody out there used Castrol syntech??? ???

I use cstrol syntec with great results. But, if your motor has alot of miles it might actully start leaking or smoking when you switch to synthetic oil. Synthetic ssems to find its way through smaller gaps then regular oil. I wouldnt advise it after about 50,000 miles. Some people can use it with more miles and not have a problem. It all depends on how your motor was takin care of. You can use a synthetic blend without much trouble.  As for filters, I use the Napa gold. It is made by wix. I used to use fram thinking they were a good filter. Then I saw cutaways of many of the popular filters. Fram was one of the worst as far as build quality goes. Kendal is a great oil also but like someone said its very hard to find here in oregon. Also you might try the lucas oil stabalizer. I use this straight in my differentals, tranny ,and t case. It seems to quiet them down alot, and it also sticks to the metal much better than regular gear oil.

What's bad about Fram's?

Less filter media, cardboard end caps on the media, string holding the filter media in a cylinder shape.

Go here for all the gory details in pictures.

minimopar.net/oilfilterstudy.htm

I'm betting you won't use Fram after seeing that.

Kinda sad isn't it?  I used Frams for years on a number of cars and trucks, but, I guess it's never too late to change.  I don't have a Napa guy near me, but I can get a Purolater Pure One, so I'm sticking with that for now.
