If we decide to move to this land were looking at, it will be about a half mile of dirt/mud road.
I'm wondering if I will need to get a body lift, susp. lift or just some good tires? To all those questions- whats a good brand, whats a good amout of lift?
I'm not gonna be rock crawling or anything but I don't want to get stuck in the mud or snow in the winter.

You will be suprised at where you can go in a stock Tracker. I would recommend trying out the road/trail with a friend (to pull you out if you have trouble)in a stock set up and see if you have any trouble, then go form there. If it looks like you will only have trouble in bad weather you could do as little as adding a winch to pull yourself if you get stuck. But definately go with a good set of tires, thay can make a huge difference.

if you where only going for tires and only trying to get home with them BFG Mud T/A's would be a great.  but if those anrn't good enough then you could always switch to boggers.  lol  lata Stu

A rear locker with some MT tires, you won't
get stuck, probably not even with stock tires.

But now if you need an excuse to modify

What is the biggest size wheel/tire combo I could put under a STOCK 99 Tracker?

If I get bigger tires will I need to get different gears?
Is  a locker hard to install? (I don't even know where to start on that)

About tires: How are the winters, in your neck of the woods?

If you get consistent sub-zero (celsius) temperatures, A/T or M/T tires will be good for about 9 months. For the remaining three months, get a good set of winter tires that are good on ice. After a rainy fall, muddy roads tend to ice up during winter, at least it does here in Canada.  

Umm well the temp always changes. One day it could be freezing and the next warm and sunny I wish it make up its mind. It stinks when you wash it and then the next day the ground thaws and you got mud

I ran 235x75-15 tires for years before
I did all the lift mods.

I used to buy BFG Trailmaker tires from
Pace Club, before it changed to Costco,
great tire, wears long time, but I don't
even know if that tire is still made.

You don't need gears, the 235 tire corrected
my speedometer to read 100% correct, I
thought it was funny, but stock tires read 2-3
MPH faster than true speed, (smaller tire= more
wheel RPM) which is interpreted by the speedo as
faster that real speed.

The stock wheels are fine with 235 tires, geez I
got 31x10.5s on my stock rims ...... LOL

Lockers are not hard, but you might want to
have it installed, unless ur a mechanical nut
like me  .

Let me tell you a locker makes a huge difference,
it's like a 25% increase in traction over open diffs.

235's on the stock 15x5.5in rim? That would be GREAT if I could use the stock rims and save some money. But I was told nothing bigger than 215's will fit.

About lockers. What is a good kind to get? I don't know much about them.

Bigger tires are safer, they hold more weight.
You will get a little rub at full turn lock but
that can be fixed with adjustment of the limit
stops. yes 15x 5.5 rims 235 no problem I have
one mounted now, AT from Pep-Boys Durangos.

I really like the tires, they do well in the dry dirt,
it's not a mud tire, I'm sure it will pack up with mud.

Swampers shed mud like crazy, I love em in the gew.

Here where I live the roads are crappy! so a tracker is  very practical  to drive.
I found that the stock size tires worked pretty good for light off road use. But I just can't leave well enough alone.

I put on some 235 75 15's with a fairly open tread they did fit tight on the stock 5.5 " rims but worked fine.  I did check and found ( like the  previous post) this size tire corected my spedometer (thats a happy thing)
however I was not satisfied with the tires being stuffed onto the stock rims so I got a set of white spoke 15x7's. The tires fit better but the rear tires would rub on the fenders when I hit a good bump.  So I got a set of Terrain tamer shocks for the back . The shocks helped but the tires still rubbed.    So raising the vechile was nessary I got a set of V6 Grand Vitara springs from Rick |removethispart|@ hawk  and put them in .
The back springs dont fit right so I had to make them fit this is  not recomended! (Mine is a 94 these may fit newer trackers,I don't know? )
Any how when this was done I ended up with 3-4" of lift and no more tire rub.
This  rig  is now a good off roader I. E. shortly after this stuff was done I had an opertunity to pull a full size Blazer off the beach Yea it looked funny pulling th big guy out of the sand
It would have been fine on the beach before the mods but I would never have been able to get to the beach (bug huge ruts)at the stock heigth or stock tires.  ...

OK,  the moral of the story is these are gereat rigs stock   your transpo needs are probably already met but fixing it up is a fun and can be progressive if you like.
