Well if you don't buy a ready made snorkle ($200+) then most seem to use black ABS plastic tubing in 3" or bigger, looks like black PVC at home depot.
As to where it comes out it depends what you drive, i think sammy's do it on the right side? and kicks on the left, X90's on the left. From the air box out the side of the front qtr panel and up the windshield support.

I would say i have to have the best snorkle ever made.  It ant flashy or anything but you can't see it anyway.  I took the stock air rammer thing,  did a 180  with it, cut it in half,  plastic welded it togather, selded up all all the cracks and cut a whole in the fire wall and sealed it all up.

ARB has one and its pretty nice but runs around $230. I have one but just hate to cut up my fender (drill a 3.5inch) and miss my mark.

I built one for a '96 Explorer out of 2.5" I.D. (3" O.D.) Electrical PVC from Lowes.  Total cost without the head was about $40.  Head alone costs $60 or so.  Here's some pix of the snorkel/head.  The head is an ARB Safari Snorkel head ordered from JD's offroad.  I think the part # for just the head is ARB 000135000.

FYI, ARB offers two sizes of Snorkel heads.  I believe there is a 3" and a 4".  For the 4 bangers, a 3" would be sufficient.  The one above is a 3" since the stock box fits the 2.5" I.D of the pipe perfectly.  Delivery of just the head can be a problem.  It took almost 2 months to get the one we ordered because no one had just the head in stock, so it had to be shipped from Australia.

Nice work, I especially like your attention to detail, it looks like you really took your time making the hole in the fender for  the snorkel.  That alone would have driven me nuts, I'd probablu go full bull moose nuts with a sawzall and before I'd know it I'd be one less fender on the Tracker ;D  Nice Job,   Dave.     Ps, can you show an interior view too?

Thanks,  I bordered the hole with a piece of door edge molding from Wal-Mart to make it look better.  I used a jigsaw to do the cutout .  A little more precise than Dr. Sawzall.  8)  When you say an interior view, do you mean without the fender, or from inside the truck??  I have shots I took with the fender off, but none from inside the truck.  I also don't have the truck any longer, I returned it to the owner.  I was just modifying it for her.

Here are some of the install pix I have.  Wood blocks were used to get the right positioning before I cut aluminum blocks to fit.

Ok, so what does the box look like on the inside?  Is it just a scoop or does it have somthing to keep rain out of it on the highway?

The way it's designed, the rain is channeled to the outside and the water runs down the outside of the pipe.  There are slots cut for that purpose.  Easier way to keep the rain out is to turn the head around backwards when you're driving in the rain.  It's just held on with a large hose clamp.
