Hi, we just bought a 2000 Tracker and just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.  I looked in the posts and couldn't find anything on it.  If you push the transmission a little hard the gears will grind.  Like downshifting form 5th to 4th or upshifting from 2nd to 3rd.  Have any of you ever experienced this before?  A friend of mine who is a mechanic has an Alldata program and there is a TSB on it.  It seems that there is a rebuild kit where you replace the syncros and there are larger springs in the kit.  Have any of you had this done by a Chevy/Suzuki dealer?  I'm kind of leary of this , I've always had the opinion that transmisions, transfer cases, and differentials should be left to the pros, and I'm affraid they might make it worse.  It's not bad, if I have to shift in a hurry I just double clutch or slip shift and it's fine.  Any comments or recomendations would be appreciated, thanks    Dave

Well, I guess not too many of you have my problem .  I found out on a couple of other boards that it does happen, and that changing to synthetic gear oil helps, have any of you tried this?  Did it help?  Thanks again,   Dave

I thought one of the others who run a manual transmission might reply. Here's my two-cents'-worth.

The synthetic gear lube won't hurt. When you drain the old lube, check it for metal particles. The synchronizers may have been hashed by somebody who got impatient with the transmission. If this is so, the new lube will put off the inevitible, that is a new or rebuilt transmission.

While you're under the car, you might as well change the lube in the transfer case and differentials at the same time as the transmission.

It's hard to say, the truck is in near perfect condition.  It was a leased vehicle that a woman possesed that was turned in with 34,000 miles |removethispart|@3 years.  It's been very well taken care of, it's never been hit, extremely clean, and doesn't seem to be beaten in any way shape or form.And it was a GM certified used, so they already changed the gear oil/transfer case/differentials, oil/filter/ air filters/etc.  With the exception of the tranny and transfer case, I could tell it was all done, along with a fresh set of brake pads on the front.  Even the frame is clean!  My old Trooper didn't even have one anymore  Thanks for the reply, I'm hoping that someone with a 5 speed will be able to give some input as well.  

I too have read this issue from time to time.......synth. oil does help ifnot, you are looking at a worn sychronizer.

Yepper, I'm gonna wait a bit, then change the gear oil to something synthetic, anybody got any recomendations??

In the VW world, can't go wrong with Redline Racing Tranny fluid.

Is Redline racing tranny fluid a synthetic?  Where can you buy it, at an Advance auto parts store, or place like that???

Redline is synthetic.  You maybe able to find Mobil 1 at Advanced Auto, but not redline.  Amsoil and Royal Purple are very good synthetic oils as well.  Look on line for the nearest dealer.  Good luck.

Thanks, I'll give it a try when I change the gear oil.  Untill then it's runing just fine as long as I go easy with it.    Dave
