??? about swaping a 2.0 to a 2.7
« on: August 17, 2003, 09:51:15 AM »
This will be going into my 99 Tracker Convertable 4x4 that weighs a mere 3250lbs with me, the hardtop and a full tank of gas.  8) I know cause I went to a truck scale and did it!

There is a guy on Ebay that is selling the 183hp- 2.7V6 from a 02 XL-7 that I have been wanting for sooooooo long. He is selling the complete motor with everything on it incluing wiring and computer/ecm and any other parts I will need for a swap like brackets and exhaust manifolds and also the 5sp trans. His price is $900 for everything plus whatever the highest bid is. It's starting at $300 but has a reserve.(prob $500 like a lot of his others) And about $150 for shipping. So in all if I can win it for $500 I'll be paying about $1600 for it shipped. :o   Or I could drive 8.5 hrs and pick it up. It will happen if you guys think it will be easy and also if the wife aproves(Doubt It)

???My question is do you think it would be difficult to do this swap?  ???

I mean if everything is really there. Or do you thing I'm gonna get in way over my head? I have no real knowlege of engines or swaps but a lot of my family does.(Uncle, bro's-in-law and friends) They would all take payments in beer too. LOL  ::)

I really would like to go hybrid with my Tracker but if I'm gonna be stuck with 2 engines and no working car I don't want to do it! :'(

Your getting into a can of worms man, it might look bolt in
but you know it's gonna take 3 weeks to do. I would like
to just have a 2.0, you got it and want more, nobody is
happy with what they got, like the dude that has the 2.5
and wants more power. If this is a stocker run it and enjoy it.
if you put a lift and suspension and some big tires, think about
the power swap, but get gears before you do, as they make up
for a lot of power you loose in tires.

One thought tho, my kick only weighs 2500 Lbs, gased up
with 33" Swampers, what makes the 99'  750 Lbs heavier?

This weekend I had the opportunity to drive the recently completed Project Vitara Extreme done by Calmini. This has the 2.5 liter engine in it from a GV. Wow! I can tell you that this little item gets up and scoots. With 32 inch tall swampers and big steel bumpers, it was not a problem to spin the LSD rear end. The car is an automatic so, for me, the first gear is a little anemic but when it shifts up, you really start scootin!

Now for the bad news, The swap was really intensive. Most every thing plugged in but they actually had to remove the dash completely and put in the entire [entire] GV wiring harness... The install looks factory and runs great but is a lot of work...

Thats what I was wondering about! I was pretty sure that the engine would bolt right in no problems but would wiring be a pain. They took the whole dash apart that wouldn't be too bad. The big thing I'm worried about is that I would have to buy/fab major parts. I think I'll call Calmini and see if I could talk to Steve personally and see what he says.

Well I called Steve and talked to him. He said it was a very easy bolton deal except the wiring because he wanted to keep the power windows and locks and things like that. My Tracker didn't come with that stuff so it will be easier. He said for me to try to get the complete car to make sure I get all the parts I need and also to make sure it runs before I but it.

Got a reply from the guy selling the engine. He told me the shell(was rolled)and engine swap for $1900 :o

He said that he was going to take out all interior, airbags, and wheels. Also any good body panels. So I guess if there is a good door or two they will be gone too.

He said that it was drivable if I had wheels for it. So that I could get it on a trailor or dolly easier.

Well my wife and I decided to hold off on the swap for atleast 6months so that we could get some bills paid off and some $$$ saved up to do it instead of putting it on the credit card. I will do the swap and keep you guys/gals updated on any other mods I do untill then. Later, Mike
