Transmission Whining????
« on: August 05, 2003, 10:35:36 PM »
Last week after I drove my X-90 home from work (90 miles |removethispart|@ 90 MPH) My transmission was whining :P. It sounds like a bearing going bad. This same thing hapned to my Kick at 150K but it started quiet and took a month to get loud.

The only time it does NOT make the noise is with the clutch pushed in and the shifter out of gear. Input shaft bearing ???

I'm going to pull it this weekend when I'm installing my Calmini 2" lift on the X. Has anyone re-built their trans after having this problem? If so what was worn out? After having the same thing seem to fail in both my Kick and my X, and hearing of this same thing on a couple of others, I would think it would be a bearing wearing out?

If I had to SWAG, I'd say clutch release bearing.

Cool, Scott is pulling the trans today and we are tearing into it tomorrow :-/ The last time I just got a used low mileage one from Hawk. This time I'm going to see if I can fix it. If not, I'll call Hawk again :o

Mike,
If you still have your old trans fix it!!! It's an easy fix once you get the trans out. Mine was not the input shaft bearing, but the rear lower shaft bearing. We took it apart this weekend and will have it on the road Friday (no time during the week to work on her :'(). You can inspect all but one (I think) of the bearings without getting into the inner case. I believe that the input shaft has one bearing inside the inner case.

Pull the rear cover first and check the bearings. This trans was acting just like my Kicks Trans. I hate I tossed the trans from my Kick over a bearing :P Hey, you live and you learn ::)

Man, never toss anything until your sure it can't be fixed.
If for nothing else learn what went wrong and fix it later.

Yea, your right :P It made me sick to pick up a $15 bearing to fix the same problem I had when I bought a new trans for my Kick :'( I did not have any where to store a busted trans at the time so I told Mark to just trash it, damn do I feel stupid now >:(

Zig.... One important thing mabey you forgot.  ::) It started going out in northern Florida! I dont remember how many thousand miles away I was from home. 2000 miles or so??? And when I say started.... I mean a 600 watt sterio,  90 mph and topless couldnt drown out the noise! Their were so many metal shavings in that thing I still dont know why it kept going.Gears? What gears!  :o Another reason I love these things. It still has never left me walking, No matter how mean I am to it. :-[

Yea, I would of trashed it. My X-90 only had to go about 90 miles to the shop from work ;) And it was the rear lower bearing that went out so all of the (few) metal shavings settled streight down on the drain magnet ;D It's off to the shop to finish my lift and get the trans back in the X-90, and new tires tomorrow 8)

I dont feel so  :P about my last trans. after this weekend >:( There was one bearing bad (loose in its race), very little metal shavings and no visable wear to the gears (to an untrained eye). With new bearings replaced there is still a little whining in the trans (in all but 4th >:( All of that work put me back to the condition of about a month ago >:( I'm guessing that my driving it untill the whining became untolarable wore the gears and I'll get to do another trans. in a few thousand more miles :'(
