Menefee Park is located west of Yamhill, Oregon (Yamhill is on Oregon
Highway 47 south of Forest Grove/Hillsboro; north of McMinnville/Newberg).
As you come through the huge metropolis of Yamhill (right!), at the north
end of town, there is (I think it's still there) a gas station on the east
side and Pike Road on the west side. Take Pike Road for 5 +/- 5 miles (past
the church and then various nurseries) and it takes you to the county park -
Menefee Park. It's hard to get off the main road. There is one sharp L in
there where the road - heading west, goes north (past Mustang Ranch I
recall). The park has a single covered picnic area and a restroom and a
bridge over the river. Not much else. Plenty of parking along the side of
the road.
Bring the usual stuff: lunch, cell phone, GPS, maps of the Trask
Mountain/Ginsberg Point/Trask and associated area (can't remember the other
names of the topos), shovel, spare tire, warm clothes, tow straps, water,
repair stuff (tools, spare parts), etc.
Based on the numbers, we will break into sub-excursions. If you are willing
to be a sub-excursion trip leader, please email me privately. You don't
need much experience - I can point out a direction to head/explorer. You'll
need the appropriate topo maps if you don't have them. Let me know if you
have any of this area. Also let me know what ability level you want to lead
(stock, mild modification, extreme). There are many great trails here for
all ability levels (Spar, Ginsberg Point, Murphy Camp and associated hills,
Pinball, Viagra, etc.) Many of these trails haven't been explored by me in
years, so have an open mind in what we might encounter. Part of wheelin' is
to find new areas, do some exploration, etc. Have an open mind and you
won't be disappointed. Expect snow at the higher elevations. This actually
might limit what's open to us.
No need to RSVP to me if you want to attend. We'll play it by ear and
adjust accordingly.
