A/C to Air compressor

A/C to Air compressor

can i use my a/c compressor as an air compressor and conect it to a tank. has any one done this before.

you need to keep the compressor lubricated, so some air tool oil wont hurt, there are kits for some gm type a/c pumps to be converted, check some lowrider sites

nice article, i was ganna do this but i am thinking of just getting a small air comp and a tank.... here is another link to check out, good luck and keep us posted if you give it a go ;D

The york compressors are great.  I ran one in my 71 bronco and it worked better than any electric pump I've ever seen.  I could set the throttle to 2000 rpm and run air tools easily.  I wonder if I can fit a york on my tracker, although the the york compressor probably weighs as much as the 1.6L motor ;D

so according to this article i set up my ac pump as a compressor but it is going to cost me about $175. for that i can get a quik-air for $196 and be able to run y tools. i'll have to price this stuff my self.

Will that setup in the link work for a kick too?  is anyone else running their AC as an Air pump? Anyone run one of those power tanks?

i was just ganna buy an el. compressor/tank and then got to thinking this might be a fun project even if it does cost a bit more.  BUT, after looing around i am having problems finding stuff, or finding it for even close to the cost listed.  mostly i just cant get the stuff around here.  but i think i am going to give it a go anyway and just buy stuff on line and suck up the extra $ for shipping.

Q.  will the trackick a/c put out at least as much psi as a sami one?  i would think so.

I have the Sammy A/C compressor mounted and working.

I bought an inline oiler from a hydraulic hose place for $30.
I had a few air line fittings already to make up the hose and such.
My try out was as follows:

With 14 lbs. of air in my 30 x 9.5' in 1 minute at an idle I added 11 psi to the tire.
I felt that was pretty good.
I have no holding tank, so I can't use air tools for work.

I opted for this setup because I seem to keep forgetting to take the portable plug in air compressor with me on trips.
I was just looking to air up after sand running.

I have a few pics of my work if you would like it.
However, I'm new to this forum and I'm not sure how to post a pic yet.

i ended up getting an old pony bottle dive tank. i have filled all 4 tires 7 times and my buddies a couple of times plus changed a tire with an impact the pressure gauge still reads half. the regulator can from a dive shop here in town. it cost me $7 to fill the tank.

I converted my AC compressor to air but could not keep oil out of the tires no matter how much I filtered it. It was fast though. I did alot of research on the 12v compressors and found this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4540985920&category=43986 style to be the best (the Quickair is not very fast). The compressor alone (without the regulator and tank) is the same as the one sold in the 4wd magazines under the name of 'Extream Air' for about $400. One of the best features is the 100% duty cycle
