ARB 27 spline sidegear swap
« on: February 14, 2005, 04:02:56 PM »
Can anyone confirm that it is possible to swap the sidegears in an ARB rear Kick locker(RD79) from the standard 26 spline to the Dana 27 spline? Part numbers for the sidegears would be great too.

In reply to my own question I now have the answer. ARB have just confirmed that it was possible but they no longer do that sidegear. It has been superceded by a Dana 30 spline sidegear that fits  ;D

what are your plans??

I've been looking at rear axles for the GV after snapping 2 of them.

There isnt much in it on the 26 and 27 spline
26 spline diameter  27.4mm
27 spline diameter  29.5mm

What 27 spline shafts are you using are they custom ones or did zuki make a 27 spline, wont Dana 30 shafts be too short?

Just wondered how easy it was to get spares after all once you have a locker that should be less stress on one shaft and no sudden transfer of drive from one to another???

Don't know about less stress.  If I didn't have the rear locker on I would not have been able to put all the cars weight on the one axle.

not sure if its  me but the later suzuki stuff seems to be weaker,  like the 26 spline driver axle CV joint is smaller is smaller then the 22 spline

maybe the same with shafts,  I did notice the ARB diff works a lot better than any stock one even when not locked.  seems to transfer power nicely ,

I currently have an ARB in the rear and am putting in 5.83's when they arrive. I've been wanting to put discs on the rear and thought how about a full floater at the same time. The ARB rear also takes the D30 27 spline sidegear which ARB have since dropped and the D44 30 spline sidegear which is for an even bigger shaft. The thought is now with that size shaft I could probably do away with the Lockout hubs and just have a drive flange omn the outer as the shafts are unlikely to break. Thinking about the possibility of using an 80 series Landcruiser rear (Discs already but $$$) or Taco fronts married to the Kick housing. Maybe change stud pattern at the front to match. Lots to investigate. May know a little more tommorrow, we'll see.

Keep us updated, as I could do the same things to the GV just make the shaft a little longer.

I still can't work out why they put drum brakes on a A$30K car :(

Give spidertraxs a call If memory serves me correctly they are using 27 spline axles with suzuki 3rd members in the custom axles they make.

Waht you are doing is a Superior gear D35 axle upgrade. Use D44 xles in an ARB with 30 spline side gears. It works well in our YJs.

So if I read this correctly an ARB side gear will interchange with other ARB lockers and you plan to use the 30 spline from a d44 Arb in a kick diff then use axles from a d44./ I like it if it will really work. D44s come in all lengths from narrow track jeeps cj5s to full size chevys and fords. they would be long enough to do 2 for a kick ;D just kidding.

Thanks

Are you sure you understood them? The "Dana 30 Axle Assembly" uses a 27 spline axle shaft. This is what I'm using in the CALMINI solid axle front end (Sidekick 3rd member / Dana 30 27 spline Axle shafts) under my sidekick. The reason I ask is because there has been 'camp fire' talk that since places like Superior Axle have been making a Super 35 kit which is a 30 splined Dana 35 axle VS. 27 using the ARB and custom sidegears that all of this would be backward compatable making it possible to have a 30 splined custom shaft for your Sidekick 3rd member and axle housing. Which would be cool! Needs research...

ARB standardise as much as possible. Some sidegears can be interchanged eg. in some Nissan and Toyota ARB lockers the only difference is the sidegears. The old D35 locker (RD69) 27 spline sidegears can be fitted to the Suzuki rear locker and this is what places like Spidertrax do, only problem is you'll find you can't get them as ARB have deleted them from their line-up. They have informed me that a 30 spline sidegear is available though but I am still trying to get confirmation and part numbers.

The old D35 Air Locker RD69 27 spline sidegear part numbers are 130904R and 131004R for those that are interested in this swap and may still be able to track some down.

This is way cool sounding.  As I was considering a rear axil change.

but

I already have and ARB.  So if I can just replace the side gears, get some D44 axils and have them cut down to the right length!!!  ;D
