92 Tracker 1.6, What should I look for.
« on: July 14, 2005, 05:01:55 AM »
Hello,

I'm looking at a 92 tracker with 115000 miles on it for $325.  It was involved in an accident and looking to put the engine in a 87 Tin Top.  I'm looking for any advice on what I should check/how I should check items on the engine.  eg. compression of the engine, looks like the value cover area might have some oil around it.  Is that common?  Thanks in advance.

Look it over and run it....do a compression tst if you can
Check oil etc, just as if you were buying a driver

I bought a compression tester to check the 1.3, but have not used it.  I thought about rebuilding the 1.3, then thought better of it.  Thinking that if I pull the engine, might as well put a 1.6 in.  What should the compression be?  And what is an acceptable reading between the cylindiers?

my tired 8V is 130-135 on all 4 ... what you want on the comp test is all around the same ... one low will probably indicate bad valve (usually exhaust). Under 130 is pretty worn out IMO. Hope for 170's :)

Leaky valve cover isn't uncommon. The valves need regular (aka every 60K mile) adjustment, so my guess is that someone reused an old gasket, and now it leaks.
