getting oil off a driveway....??

is there such a chemical or substance that gets oil off a driveway? i've spilt a lot of engine oil all over the drive, its dryed, and a pressure washer doesn't get it off.... any suggestions??

 I deal with chemicals all day ( leagally ;D)

Try miratic acid it's used for balancing pool water (weak mix) or prepping concrete for paint (stronger mix) use extreme caution and rubber gloves( it's pretty powerful at full strengh)

 Do small test spots first ( to much could turn your driveway white) usually 3-1 or 4-1 mix
You can buy this stuff at any hot tub place or hardware store.

When your done rinse very well to remove any left over residue( don't dump in toilet it's hard on plastic pipes to)

Oh ya don't snuff it either ;D

Wow, it's pretty funny no one knows this simple little solution. Varsal and HOT water +soap. pour some varsal, let it seep in a little, and add the hot soapy water. Use a shitty broom and start scrubbing. Takes that shit right off! I learned my lesson after spilling 2 stroke oil and quad tranny fluid all over hte place, multiple times.

The safe way to me would be to use tide mixed with a little hot water, or a engine degreaser or oven cleaner,next would be acetone, or seafoam that I believe has enzimes in it that eat oil.

The solvent and sweat works good at the shop no arguement, that's how we keep the place clean.

     But at home I'm dealing with ashphalt and solvent eats it alive (tried a test patch). tide and hot water, oven cleaner etc haven't touched it .

     I'm open to ideas still....

I got this stuff that eats oil, it's an enzyme,
turns oil into water and CO2, but it will eat
asphalt, I spilled a little on the new slurry coat
they put on the parking lot at my old work, it
ate the spots clean in like one Min   :o

This stuff is safe and biodegradeable, smells
like dish soap, but man does it work.

I was using it to eat some diesel fuel residue
in a water holding septic system, worked like
a charm, and we didn't have to get the tank
pumped at a cost of $5 per gallon

 I gotta make a correction to my sugestion

the mix if you use it is more like 20-1

 NOT 3-1 or 4-1 (just a little to strong :-[)

I was reading tech on aluminum prep at the time, OOPS!

 this is a safe way you just have to be careful ( not like something from an Aliens movie) ;D

You could try a weed burner or a small propane torch and see what it does, should not hurt the asphalt.

A long time ago, I got some stuff from Amway that did a great job of cleaning oil off  (And out of) a concrete driveway. I don't remember what it was called, but it was a powder and I believe I wet the concrete, sprinkled the powder on, left it sit for a few minutes, scrubbed it with a brush, and rinsed it off. I don't know whether you have Amway dealers in (or is it on?) the Channel Islands or not or even Amway still makes the stuff. But, if you can get it, that would be my recommendation.

castrol super clean and some elbow grease will do the trick. Can find it at any auto parts store :D

The best thing that iv'e found so far for cleaning oil off  concrete driveways is LACQUER THINNER. It will evaporate quickly but it breaks down the oil and penetrates in to the concrete. If your an eviromental kind of guy. dont hose it down the gutter.

I use straight Simple Green and a scrub brush. I spray the miracle green cleaner on the oil, wait a few minutes and take a scrub brush and get to work. Rinse off with plenty of clean water after you're done. Don't wet the pavement before you start, just pour or spray it right on. Good luck...

my roomates pig of a fullsize chevy van pisses oil out on our driveway on a regular basis so I have cleaned our driveway about 4 times in the last year. when you live in lajolla (aka snob central) people notice a dirty driveway.

Our driveway is concrete so it a little more sturdy than asphalt. At any rate I have had really great success with the purple cleaner crap you get at Autozone. Comes in a big antifeeze size bottle and it's in a white bottle with purple letters. I actually think it's called purple power. Anyhow it's citrus based and environmentally friendly.. I spray liberal amounts of the cleaner on the oil stains and let it set for most of the day. I then take a garden hose and a push broom and have at it.. some light brushing to make suds and lots of water.

works like a charm everytime.


As I see oil stains I just hit them with the cleaner and let it sit. The next rain usually takes the bulk of it away..

Why are people worried about the enviroment when they are asking about how to lift OIL off the driveway?
