runs rich
« on: July 20, 2005, 10:57:19 PM »
I've got an 89 sidekick 1.6 8 valve that runs rich. If you rev it up it will puff a little black smoke and the exaust stinks real bad. I've checked the tps voltage and resistance of the coolant sensor, both check ok. I wonder if anyone good give me any ideas what to do next.IT has 2inch exaust no cat. and a K|removethispart|@N air filter. I've also changed the o2 senser. any help would be great. thank you.

That happened to me when the MAP got
unplugged from it's vacuum source

The MAP is a little black box with wires
and a vacuum line going to it, close to
the battery on the firewall

Try there first, it has more to do with
the mixture than any other sensor

I have a 90 Tracker running the 1.6 8valve and when I replaced the exhaust manifold with a header, I changed the O2 sensor to a new one(Bosch, from advance). I also cut out the cat and I noticed it was running really rich. To fix it, I ended up putting the old O2 sensor back in and suddenly it ran just like before with no being rich anymore... The Bosch O2 sensor didn't work from the factory and I've read other similar complaints on other boards about the 1 wire o2 sensor from bosch not working out of the box, at least on our application...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

I got a bad Bosch O2 also, but this
was several years ago, I would say
stick with the OEM brand, I have seen
AC brand in Suzuki vehicles, so get one
of those.

BTW the only way I figured out the O2
wasn't working was the mixture meter
I installed didn't work, so I started checking
things out and found the bad sensor
