Need hard top help
« on: July 26, 2005, 07:42:38 PM »
I purchased a new hard top recently, and got it today. Its manufactured by pro top. Everything was going together without a hitch, but I went to put the back section on and I can't for the life of me get the top to fit on the lip of the roof. Does anyone with this type of top have any tricks or tips to get it to go on. After spending a boat load of money on it, I would like to figure it out before I have to send it back. Thanks, Andrew

You have the newer style tracker, right?(95 and up) You need to remove all of the soft top hardware including the plastic channel around the opening. Remove everything except the rubber gasket. Then the top should slip on right...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

It's a tight fit, especially when new. I don't know if you're into R/C cars at all, but if you are and happen to have any silicone shock oil(viscosity doesn't matter), use an old washcloth to apply a very thin coating of silicone oil to the rubber gasket surface. That should help you slide it into place...

Of course if you get too frustrated and send it back, I still have mine for sale and I'll even help you install it! LOL! ;)

I think that is the brand I have.

Mine was already on it, but I think I understand what your saying.

I can't get the back part on by myself. I need a little help keeping it steady and lined up.

Kinda hold the back part (by the back door) up, while pushing the front groove onto the targa part of the tracker. Once you get that part, you can line up each side as you push it on.

It is kinda difficult to do, but I'm sure that after you do it a couple times, you will have it figured out.

Yeah thats the same top, but the directions say hold it at a 90 degree angle so it seals properly. So basically I shouldn't tip it and just shove it on. I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip with the oil digger, I'm into rc/s a bit so I have some shock oil around I'll try that. Also zuks thanks for the help.

Yeah I know but When i tilt it up, the lower lip is no where even close to slipping over the targa bar. Its almost like the interior trim is too thick for it to work.

Also thanks for all the replys, but after looking at the top this morning, it just doesn't look like its possible for it to fit. Also i've tilted it to the point of it being vertical and tried to get it on, but the bottom lip just wont slip over, It started to on one side but the other just wouldn't go.

don't give up, i was experiencing the same problem your having, couldn't get it to fit just the way your explaining it. believe it or not but i think it takes two people to get it on, it did for me. funny cause my old full size blazer i was able to do it myself.

That was with two people, I just can't get it on. I'll recruit some friends over the weekend I guess and try.

I'd like to see some pictures of the rig and the edges of the top. There's no reason it shouldn't fit, or go on easily, I can put mine on and take it off by myself in about 5 miniutes, and switch from hard to soft top in about a half hour. Something might be wrong with the top.
